Sporty Styling—the M.M. Way: 7 Movement-Friendly Outfits That Happen to Be Right On Trend

Office-approved, action-ready outfits you can score right now.

By Emma Steinbergs

If you have a long-running relationship with our clothes, you already know our stance when it comes to trends. New to M.M.? Here’s a quick replay: While timeless designs crafted from functional fabrics will always remain the name of our game, we also like to incorporate fashion-forward pieces and of-the-moment colors.

This fall, we’ve noticed one trend coming down the runways that plays especially well with this philosophy, and that is “sporty” styling. From stretchy, sleek materials to super-streamlined silhouettes, sporty elements have entered the arena of everyday fashion in full force. To be clear, we’re not talking about athleisure. There’s a time and a place for track pants, fanny packs, oversized puffer jackets, and baseball caps, but most days, we prefer to rely on looks that are a little more elevated.

That’s why this month, for the latest edition of our Power Casual Report series, we’re showing you what sporty styling—the M.M. way—looks like in action. Below, we put together seven Power Casual outfits that are especially movement-friendly and conveniently right on trend.

The M.M. Elements of Sporty Styling

#1: Stretchy Fabrics

Not to brag, but we’re kind of known for our use of secretly stretchy fabrics—key word: secretly. Even our most agile styles maintain an element of structure, so you may feel like you’re wearing pajamas, but you’ll always look put-together.

#2: Streamlined Silhouettes

If we’ve learned anything from sportswear, it’s that an active lifestyle has no place for fussiness. Say goodbye to overly complicated pieces you’ll find yourself fidgeting with or excess fabric that will weigh you down.

#3: Ease of Care

Even if you’re not breaking a workout-level sweat in your sporty styles, you probably don’t want to run back and forth to the dry cleaner’s if you can help it. That’s why we make sure the vast majority of our pieces are machine-washable. Some even feature Polygiene®, an all-natural anti-odor finish that allows items to go longer between washes.

Seven Sporty-Style Outfits

1.

The Hole in One

Take notes from the golf course—but make it chic. Pair the cable-knit Eloise vest with the khaki-colored Milo jeans for a subtly preppy combination that nods at traditional attire found on the fairway. The vest’s fiery red hue packs a punch, so all you need to complete the look is a pair of sneakers and some vintage-inspired stud earrings.

The On-the-Move Suit

Traveling for work? Our lightweight, wrinkle-resistant OrigamiTech fabric was specifically designed to go anywhere, anytime. Thanks to an activewear-adjacent handfeel, it also gives off a perfectly sporty vibe while providing the look of suiting. Try the Gwynne dress—which doubles as a trench coat (read: gives you two pieces for the packing space of one)—with the jogger-inspired Colby pants and easy-to-walk-in Zelda boots. Layer the fitted Shani top underneath, and complement their blue-green hue with the coordinating Yuna earrings.

3.

Stretch Your Suiting

If you wear a lot of suits, it might be time to stretch your perception of how tailored separates should look and feel. Made from our Italian-made light ponte, the Janette blazer plus the Allyn pant is the perfect combination to start with, since it gives you shape while allowing you to be agile—both literally and figuratively. For a desk-to-dinner look, pair your Power Casual suit with a fitted turtleneck, leopard-print shoes, and playful statement earrings. Headed to a concert after work? Swap your top with one of your graphic tees, and switch out your blazer for one of your denim jackets or leather jackets.

The Pants with Passionate Fans

With over 70,000 fans, our #1 best-selling Foster pants became popular for their feel-good fit that feels like you’re wearing work-appropriate yoga pants. For an elevated take on a sweatshirt and leggings, pair them with the beloved Theo pullover, some textured flats, and a set of pearly earrings. On your day off, slip on your sneakers, wear a sports bra in a fun hue, and style your slouchy sweater off the shoulder.

5.

Dive into Scuba

When you’re surfing our site, you may overlook our scuba pieces at first, but keep in mind that these simple-seeming styles have a super-buttery, slightly bouncy texture that can only be appreciated IRL. Even if your personal style doesn’t lean sporty at all, this unique fabric is worth trying. To create a Power Casual set, layer the Sierra shacket over the Elsa dress, which is body-skimming but also hangs a little loose. Ride the wave of chic sleekness you have going on with knit ankle boots and matching earrings.

A Tonal Look to Love-Love

Historically one of the chicest sporting scenes, tennis matches are worth looking to for refined outfit inspiration. Anna Wintour immediately comes to mind, and you can channel her ageless dressing in anything from a crisp shirt dress or, come winter, a cashmere turtleneck with a flowy skirt. If you’re attending a posh event yourself, finish your look with classic accessories like leather pumps and gold hoops.

7.

A Super-Speedy Ensemble

One of our newest dress styles, the Rosie has a shift shape, a minimalist aesthetic, and an above-the-knee hemline. To play up the casual side of your dress, add a sporty white sneaker and a heather gray half-zip sweater, which you can tie around your shoulders for a preppy yet effortless look.
