Eight Things That Prove True Luxury Happens in Private

Indulge in your independence via everyday luxuries, including limited-edition M.M.LaFleur x Petite Plume sleepwear.

By Emma Steinbergs

Escaping to a silent retreat upstate. Digging into your second bowl of pasta while swaddled in cashmere on the couch. Blasting ABBA throughout your apartment. What do these activities have in common? They embody true luxury better than any designer handbag or fast car ever could, because they’re just for you—not for the sake of impressing other people.

In our opinion, elevating your alone time is the ultimate luxury. After all, time to yourself can be  hard to come by and is absolutely instrumental in maintaining your mental health. It helps to strengthen your sense of self, serving as a reminder that you deserve to participate in an enjoyable endeavor of your choice.

So next time you’re looking to treat yourself, we encourage you to go it solo. Need some inspiration? Here are eight things that will remind you that true luxury happens in private.

1. Beautiful pajamas

A night in calls for luxurious clothing. And in our opinion, nothing says I’ve made it like gorgeous pajamas. You feel at ease but look elegant. No one is there to see you, but you still dressed up. Fabulous.

To get you started on your sophisticated sleepwear journey, we just launched a limited-edition sleepwear collection with luxury pajama brand Petite Plume. Each piece features our beloved Sahara print and is made from 100% pima cotton jersey, which drapes beautifully and softens with each washing. The collection includes a classic pajama set, a long sleeve short set, a subtly sexy nightshirt, a cozy robe, and a matching eye mask. Bonne nuit!

2. Solo dining.

Whether you’re single or in a relationship, we’re big proponents of taking yourself out to dinner. Grab a seat at the bar, start with your favorite cocktail, and proceed to order exactly what you want. You’re not technically “in private,” but you’ll feel like you’re in your own world as you anonymously observe your surroundings.

3. Comfortable, functional clothing.

At M.M., we believe all clothes should be comfortable and beautiful. However, the discreet, thoughtful design details we include in all of our pieces are for your benefit alone. Exhibit A: office-ready trousers that secretly feel like sweats.

4. A finely tuned skincare routine.

Of course, healthy skin looks good, but it feels even better—which only you can appreciate. Once you know what works for you and what doesn’t, your skincare routine transforms from a dreaded obligation into a relaxing self-care ritual. Before you know it, you’ll look forward to this built-in alone time. If you sleep with an eye mask, be sure to select one that’s made from natural, breathable fibers like this buttery pima cotton one.

5. A scented candle.

A candle-lit room is the perfect picture of peaceful personal time. Fragrances can also be quite polarizing, so take the opportunity to light whatever scent floats your boat. If you’re a fan of sandalwood, try our Passport candle, which also includes notes of juniper and cypress and is designed to transport you.

6. A dance party for one.

It doesn’t matter if you have two left feet and no rhythm. Let your hair down, slip into your new PJs, put on some Robyn, and dance to the beat of your own drum.

7. A guilty-pleasure show.

No, The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City is not intellectually enriching, and that’s the point. Sometimes, it helps to fixate on someone else’s drama, and this is best done in an isolated, judgment-free zone.

8. A great book.

Reading is an inherently solitary activity, and you’re far more likely to immerse yourself in the story when you’re alone in a quiet, comfortable space. For next-level coziness, try this chunky cardigan or this luxe robe. Need a new book rec? See what the world’s most interesting people are reading.
