Lean into tried-and-true silhouettes.
For easy dressing, it’s incredibly useful to have a strong understanding of the silhouettes that work best for you—and then stock up on multiple colors. Luckily, we’ve released many of our best-selling, most versatile styles in a wide range of shades. Love classic T-shirts? We have everything from black to sunshine yellow. Do you rely on a rotation of stretchy-yet-structured pants? Try a style you already love in an unexpected color.
Prioritize quality and longevity.
Price matters, and I’d never encourage you to buy a piece that’s outside your budget. That said, when you’re building a long-term wardrobe, it helps to focus on price per wear (the price of an item divided by the number of times you wear it), rather than just the number on the price tag. Plus, purchasing pieces with longevity in mind is a whole lot more sustainable than constantly buying and replacing fast-fashion items. A luxurious cashmere sweater that gets softer over time is a better investment than an inexpensive but itchy sweater you’ll only wear once. You (and your loved ones) will get more use out of an intricate jacket designed to be passed between generations than you would out of a discount blazer that doesn’t fit quite right.
Embrace color.
Because it looks better on Zoom. Because it makes you happy. Because it reminds you of your favorite season. There are countless reasons to dress (and live) colorfully. This year, refresh your wardrobe with splashes of deep sea, bursts of habanero, swaths of soothing jade, and shots of martini.
Expand your definition of “neutral.”
In 2022, we predict that “neutral” will mean more than just black, white, navy, and gray. Try subbing your go-to black top for something in huckleberry. Opt for an olive suit instead of a navy one. And remember that patterns composed of neutral colors can be treated as neutrals and paired with a wide range of other shades.
Commit to quarterly closet cleanouts.
Because nothing is more satisfying, and this six-step guide makes it easy.
Live by the ABC rule: Always Be Comfortable.
If we’ve learned anything about getting dressed over the past two years, it’s that uncomfortable clothing no longer has a place in our lives. In 2022, your suits should be stretchy, your cotton T-shirts should be buttery, and your sweaters should feel like hugging a cloud.
