How to Travel Like a Pro

Style experts and seasoned travelers Jessica Camerata and Camille Carter share their top travel tips.

By Madeleine Kim

Planning a trip this summer? Once you’ve booked your flight, secured a place to stay, and made a restaurant reservation or three, it’s time to focus on the details. What are the small tweaks that will take your trip from “pretty good” to “best vacation ever”?

To help, we called on two style experts who happen to be incredibly seasoned travelers (in fact, they shared these tips with us while on a trip through Europe!). Meet Jessica Camerata (@anindigoday) of An Indigo Day and Camille Carter (@charmedbycamille) of Charmed by Camille. Below, they share the simple but effective travel tips you didn’t know you needed, plus the three styles you can always find in their suitcases.

THEIR TRAVEL TIPS

Jessica’s Travel Tips

  1. Bring a packable duffle. Whenever I travel to exciting places, I’m bound to do a bit of shopping. Bringing a packable duffle allows me to shop and collect souvenirs stress-free. This one packs up to the size of a small makeup bag, making it easy to throw into your suitcase and then stuff full of goodies for the way home.
  2. Save recommendations to Google maps. I live and die by Google maps when I travel. When I get a recommendation for the place I’m visiting, I save it to Google maps so that I can easily navigate to different places during my trip. If I find myself in a neighborhood with no plans, I’ll open my map and see if anyone has recommended something nearby.
  3. Pack a steamer. While I know hotels have irons, I really love the ease of using a steamer. Travel steamers are small and easy, and they make clothes look their best while you’re on vacation. I always text the travel group chat to see who is bringing the blow dryer and who is bringing the steamer, so we can all maximizing our suitcase space.

Camille’s Travel Tips

  1. Pack neutral colors. I typically try to pack in a neutral color palette with pieces I can mix and match throughout my trip. This way, I can create an assortment of outfits and easily adjust based on weather, a change of plans, etc.
  1. Bring a layer. Regardless of the season, I always, ALWAYS pack a neutral, lightweight sweater.
  2. Keep an “everything pouch” in your carry-on. Mine contains hand sanitizer, a hydrating face mist, hand lotion, a snack bar, Advil, a phone charger, and an external battery. Basically, it’s a pouch of essentials you can easily grab during your flight so you’re not digging through your bag in a tight, cramped seat.

THEIR PACKING LISTS

THE KIM SWEATER
M.M.LaFleur’s knitwear is always in my suitcase for an easy layer, and the Kim sweater is one of my favorites to travel with. I can throw over my shoulders for a third piece, or wear it as a sweater if the weather is a bit chilly. It’s a great neutral that goes with everything.

THE PAIGE TANK
The Paige is an easy piece that you can layer with everything. I love the super soft pima cotton; it feels like an elevated basic that’s really versatile.

THE KANE JACKET
I love a good denim jacket, and the Kane is the elevated version that can truly go from day to night. Pair it with the Paige tank and the Milo jean for a casual look, or wear it over a nice dress for an evening out. It’s the ultimate versatile denim jacket.

THE LESLIE T-SHIRT
One of my favorite tees in my closet. The Leslie feels more elevated than traditional T-shirts, and the thicker fabric means it’s less prone to wrinkling.

THE MILO JEAN
My all-time favorite M.M.LaFleur item! These jeans allow you to easily switch footwear thanks to adjustable snap hems, and the elevated fabric means they work just as well for dinner as they do for sightseeing days.

THE O’HARA BLAZER
This is such a versatile piece—you can easily throw on with wide-leg trousers, jeans, or a slip dress. I’m always a big fan of items you can dress up or down, especially when you’re limited to just your suitcase.
