Six Two-Second Tweaks to Take Your Favorite Summer Outfits from Day to Night

Because when you’re out and about and having fun, the last thing you want to do is go home and change your entire outfit.

By Madeleine Kim

Is it just me, or are calendars absolutely out of control right now? The country is opening back up, and it feels like everyone is making up for lost time with back-to-back plans—not to mention the fact that many people are navigating their return to the office on top of it all. The last thing you need between your jam-packed day and your even-more-jam-packed night is a frantic dash home to change your outfit.

It sounds cliché, but a wardrobe that goes from day to night is so necessary right now. You need pieces you can wear to work and to happy hour/game night/a dance party in your best friend’s living room. So, we rounded up six outfits that can do it all—with the help of a few two-second tweaks.

The Summer Friday Look

It’s amazing what a great jacket can do. Wear the stretchy Sant Ambroeus jardigan with the punchy Constance dress in poppy, the Ella sandals, and the Mardy earrings for a sunny-day-ready outfit that will fit right in at the office. The second the clock hits 5pm, stuff your (wrinkle-resistant) jardigan in your purse, give your favorite co-worker the secret signal, and sneak over to the bar around the corner for a half-priced Aperol spritz.

The Desk-to-Date Look

Our CEO, Sarah, has been getting more daring with her work wardrobe lately, so why shouldn’t you? Wear the sexy Dae top and Curie pants, balanced out by the ever-professional Irene slingbacks and Capri earrings. If you want more coverage for daytime, just leave the top untucked. Later, when it’s time to rush to your Wednesday dinner date, swap the Capri earrings for the bold, gold Claressa hoops and tuck in your top to accentuate your curves.

The One-and-Done Look

The Lara dress just might be *the* quintessential day-to-night piece: It has enough coverage to ensure you never feel too exposed in the office, but its asymmetrical hemline and easy-to-style silhouette make it an evening go-to. We love pairing it with the geometric Wanda earrings and Rowan flats in snakeskin for some texture. To (literally) elevate your look, swap the Rowans for the high-heeled Ella sandals, and swipe on some red lipstick, if you’re in the mood.

The Comfy-Casual Look

Night-out looks don’t always have to be super dressed-up. Try half-tucking the washable silk Vicky tank in rosewater into your go-to jeans, then add some matching pink sneakers for a tonal palette. If you need to dress things up a bit, just throw on the Arden jacket. Later, when you’re heading to your friend’s apartment for a game night, simply lose the jacket and add the fun Kalpana necklace.

The Stretchy, Layered Look

It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book, but it never gets old: Layering a sweater over a dress gives you extra coverage, plus the appearance of wearing separates. For a chic-yet-casual daytime look, wear the lightweight Butler sweater over the slinky Dylan dress with your white sneakers and small silver hoops. When you’re done with your daytime activities, swap the sneakers for some strappy sandals and adorn your hoops with some whimsical charms.

The Nighttime-in-NYC Look

In summertime, I find myself gravitating toward light neutrals when I get dressed in the morning. But for a classic night-out-in-NYC look, only an all-black outfit will do. Luckily, there’s a simple tweak that allows you to have it both ways: Start your day in the Louisa top, Cortlandt skirt, Reid belt, Ginger pumps, and Lyssa earrings—an effortlessly chic daytime ensemble. When you’re ready to transition into something a little sexier, simply swap the light-colored Louisa for the Paige T-shirt in black. (Bonus: Both tops can be easily rolled up and stashed in your purse.) For an extra bit of wow factor, add some pink lipstick.
