The 7 Cozy, Yummy, Snuggly Sweaters I’m Living in for the Rest of the Year
This is it. This is my whole wardrobe.
Last fall, I did something really dumb. I had just entered the second trimester of my first pregnancy, and my body was officially changing. One Sunday afternoon, I stood in front of my closet and thought, “Next year will be so different. Who knows what size I will be, or what I’ll want to wear! I’ll probably need new work clothes by then anyway, so why don’t I just…get rid of everything?” And so that’s what I did. I donated all my long-sleeve tops, my chunky turtlenecks, and a vast array of sweaters (minus the Nancy and the Dougherty, which I’ll probably be wearing for the next sixty years), and I created a big, empty hole in an otherwise packed New York City closet.
To some extent, I was right. There was no way I could’ve predicted so much of what has happened this fall (I mean, look around). But, almost seven months into the pandemic, having moved from New York to New England and working from home five days a week, I need a big hug from a cozy sweater more than anything—and damnit, I don’t have any! So, here are the seven I’m adding to my cart right now.
The Snyder
This is the perfect sweater to throw over pajamas while getting the coffee ready in the morning, but it also looks chic with ankle boots and jeans, heading to a pumpkin patch (I guess that’s something I’ll be doing now?). It’s a great length for a petite like me, and I love the addition of the waist-cinching belt. Once I saw the Snyder, I knew I had to have it.
The Morandi
The Morandi is classic M.M., and I can’t believe I don’t have one yet (even my daughter has one!) Designed to be the perfect desk cardigan, the Morandi is also the perfect running-outside to-check-mail cardigan, the perfect hop-in-the-car-and-go-for-a-drive cardigan, and the perfect unexpected-Zoom-meeting cardigan.
The Sharon
Proof that you can take the woman out of New York, but you can’t take New York out of the woman? My undying love of black turtlenecks. If I had to choose one style to wear for the rest of my life, this would be it. Heck, I would wear a black turtleneck to the beach if I could. The Sharon is great, because it’s just boxy enough to add a bit of volume, but it isn’t overwhelming, and the adjustable sleeves are a thoughtful touch. I might wear the Sharon so often that I’m considering getting two (thankfully, now I have the closet space).
The Daphne
I was never a huge fan of pink until I had a baby, but now I find myself coveting all my daughter’s clothes (M.M. designers, if you’re reading this, can you please make some footie pajamas)? While I wait for that dream to come true, I’m happy to wrap myself in the luxurious cashmere of the Daphne sweater in rose heather, which is as soft as a baby’s cheek and can be worn either with the removable sash or draped open for a relaxed but upscale look.
The Sophie
If, like me, you’ve spent the last six months juggling big life decisions, working from home, childcare, and general ennui over the state of everything, consider buying yourself the Sophie (because every woman deserves a cashmere sweater). The Sophie can be layered over turtleneck tees like the Axam or worn on its own (or with a pretty necklace). The cropped hemline is super stylish right now, and it pairs perfectly with high-rise pants, like the Curie.
The McKenzie
Yes, sweaters are great for when it’s cold and rainy outside, but they’re not just something I Eeyore around the house in. Sometimes I wear a sweater in a cheerful color for a much-needed mood boost. The McKenzie in medallion hits all the high notes: it has a turtleneck, it’s just oversized enough to be pecan pie-friendly, and it’s fun enough for whatever socially-distanced social events I may attempt in the next few weeks.
The Chadwick
The Chadwick is a little more lightweight than my six other picks, but it serves a really important purpose: it provides hope. Maybe I’ll get to wear it with a pair of shorts on the beach next summer. Maybe I’ll pack it in my suitcase when I attend one of the many weddings that was postponed this year. Maybe we’ll have a random warm day in November, and it will be just the thing I need. The point is, I feel like this is an important sweater for me to have, just because it’s beautiful.
