How to Incorporate Blankets—Yes, Blankets—Into Your Winter Wardrobe
Be down for whatever, as long as it's outside.
Temperatures are dropping, but new Covid cases are rising—and most likely, hanging out indoors isn’t going to feel safe anytime soon. So, despite this past week of unseasonably gorgeous weather in Brooklyn, I’m gearing up for a long winter of outdoor dining, distanced backyard gift swaps, and park picnics way past their prime. How to do this comfortably (and without catching a cold, which would be somewhat antithetical to this whole exercise)? Wearable blankets—specifically, our Angelou shawl, which just so happens to be on sale right now. Here’s how I’ll be wearing it to brave the great outdoors this winter.
Layer with Purpose
Weather has never been less predictable, and hanging out indoors has never been less advisable. Therefore, planning your layers wisely has never been more important. When you don’t know what type of climate you’ll need to dress for, opt for something like the Harlow sweater, which boasts a turtleneck and 100% cashmere for coziness, but is sleeveless in case you get hot. Pair with the breathable Tinsley trousers, stash your wearable blanket and cashmere beanie in your purse, and you’ll be ready for whatever the evening brings.
Two Blankets are Better Than One
What’s better than a wearable blanket? Two wearable blankets, of course! And thanks to cozy cashmere and a snuggly hood, the Judith more than qualifies for the category. Pair the olive-colored hoodie with the stretchy York skirt in safari for a tonal look, then add the Angelou shawl, cashmere beanie, and tights for maximum warmth. This outfit is ideal for outdoor dining, working from home, or snoozing on the couch between meetings (we won’t judge).
Dress Up for Date Night
The Aditi is a classic power dress, but with the knit Zelda boots, the edgy Reid belt, and the right mindset, it can also make for a killer date-night look—sexy in a confident-but-not-cocky type of way. For a cozy version of this go-to outfit, I just add my Angelou shawl in deep indigo and a pair of tights.
Show Up (and Show Off)
Among the M.M. team, we like to call tops like the Antoinette “showing-up tops”—the grown-up version of going-out tops—and that’s exactly what this outfit is perfect for: showing up looking (and feeling) like the most stylish and confident person in the room (or, you know, on the sidewalk). I also want to point out that—extreme chicness aside—everything in this outfit is deceptively comfortable. The Antoinette is airy and relaxed (and machine-washable!), the wide-leg Horton pants are as loungey as can be, and the knit Lana boots are crazy supportive. And the Angelou shawl is…a cashmere blanket. Enough said.
The Champagne of Sweatpants
For our last look, we’re taking it in a different direction: a wearable blanket…for your legs! I’m referring, of course, to our cashmere Keely joggers—a garment that some people (specifically, me) have called “the champagne of sweatpants.” Despite their lounge-readiness, the Keely joggers aren’t just for staying home. Try pairing them with elevated shoes, like the Zelda boots, to dress them up. Then, add the Alina T-shirt, Judith hoodie, O’Hara blazer, and a beanie, and you’re ready to relax al fresco—even if it’s 40 degrees and cloudy.
