Yes, You Are the Kind of Person Who Can Pull Off Yellow

You know, the person who goes on cool vacations, never has the Sunday Scaries, and exfoliates the exact right amount.

By Madeleine Kim

Let’s just put this out there: Yellow is not an easy color to wear. When I get dressed, I tend to rely on black basics that, on a particularly ambitious day, I might layer with something more colorful. But when I saw our new citron and canary colors, I was intrigued. Could I become the type of person who wears yellow and actually pulls it off? Because, in my very vivid imagination, that is the type of person who goes on cool vacations, never has the Sunday Scaries, and exfoliates the exact right amount, and I want to be her. Thankfully, according to M.M.’s Brand Stylist, Nyjerah, my fantasy isn’t that far from reality. She shared her three favorite ways to pull off yellow, none of which will make you look like a bumblebee. For proof, our teammate Kartinah took the outfits for a spin.

With a Denim Vibe

Re: not looking like a bumblebee, many M.M. customers prefer to steer clear of black-and-yellow combos. If you fall into that camp, opt for a dark navy, such as ink, which has a similar effect to black without the harshness. Pair the draped Ava top with the Rowley skirt—the M.M. version of a denim miniskirt—for a casual Friday look that will make you smile whenever you catch a glimpse of yourself.

With a Whole Bunch of Neutrals

Yellow’s superpower is that it pairs well with pretty much every neutral. Try it with charcoal, saddle, camel, alabaster—the world is your lemon-spritzed oyster. Nyjerah paired the Rowling top with the Scotte jacket in saddle and the Isadora pant in charcoal, which soften bright yellow without taking away its boldness.

As an Accent

Maybe a yellow shirt is a little much for you, and you’d rather start by dipping a (pointy, suede) toe in the waters of bright-color pairing. We’ve got you. Use the Irene slingbacks in canary to accent an all-neutral outfit, such as the Milo jean in fawn and the Malki top in latte—but only if you’re prepared to field compliments all day.

Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring this year, and with these sunny looks, you just might prove him right.
