3 Stylist-Approved Tricks to Turn Your T-Shirts into Work Staples

Not ready to give up your comfy WFH wardrobe? Here’s how to create polished, Power Casual™ outfits with your favorite T-shirts.

By Madeleine Kim

If you’re anything like me, you’ve been living in T-shirts for the past year. Ever since M.M. launched a line of buttery soft Pima cotton tees, I haven’t been able to get enough of them. I’ve worn them with jeans to outdoor dinner dates, with breezy skirts on warm days, and to dress up my yoga pants on Zoom. I’ve worn them to sleep, and I’ve worn them to reunite with friends. I even tie-dyed my ivory Leslie T-shirt after an unfortunate stain involving a black leather backpack and a very sweaty bike ride, just so I could keep wearing it.

That said, now that things are beginning to return to somewhat normal, I’m also starting to feel that urge to dust off my blazers and get dressed up again. But I’m not ready to stop wearing my beloved T-shirts, either. Luckily, our Brand Stylist, Nyjerah, helped me out by putting together three work-ready T-shirt styling equations that are highly aspirational and totally accessible at the same time. Check them out below, modeled by our Experience Operations Manager, Kartinah.

Construct an Almost-Suit

Anytime a painting catches my eye in a museum, I have a routine. First, I look at it from a few feet away, appreciating the landscape, portrait, still life—whatever it is—in all its expertly rendered glory. Then, I go up as close as I’m allowed, and I watch as something that seemed so lifelike dissolves into a jumble of blobs and strokes. This outfit is kind of like that. From afar, it looks like a full suit. But get up close, and you’ll realize it’s composed of unexpected ingredients: white jeans, a sunshine-y T-shirt, and a blazer. It’s what I like to call an almost-suit: It has the look and feel of a suit, but it’s formed by pieces that, alone, could easily be part of your regular weekend rotation.

Double up on Tops

If you’re not ready to give up the feeling of buttery Pima cotton against your skin, but you want to feel extra sharp for work, just wear a collared shirt over your Marcia tee—the slim fit makes it ideal for layering. The tailored Mejia pants in sharkskin give your outfit a bit of texture, and they look great with white sneakers for a Power Casual™ vibe. If you’re running errands after work, just take off the collared shirt and tie it around your waist to dress the whole thing down.

Do Knot Be Afraid of Color

You’re walking through your favorite park. It’s exactly 73 degrees, the sun is shining, and your amazing new allergy meds have rendered pollen irrelevant. There’s a group having a picnic nearby. They start playing your favorite song, and you wonder if this is a movie of which you’re the star. If you could capture that feeling in an outfit, it would be this one: the Leslie T-shirt in dusty pink, knotted up over the silk Orchard skirt in cactus, topped by the surprisingly stretchy Lilia jacket. It’s a perfect spring day in outfit form, and it’s exactly what we want to wear as we venture back out into the world.
