How to Embrace the Best Parts of Fall Fashion

Think colors inspired by foliage, nap-worthy sweaters, and our personal favorite: jaunty transitional jackets.

By Caitlin Abber

Fashion Week and the Met Ball are behind us, the first leaves have started to rain from the trees, and we are officially, squarely, autumnally in the throes of fall. A season filled with fashion musts (oversized jackets, plaid everything, ankle boots), getting dressed from mid-September to late-November is an absolute pleasure. Sure, we miss the bare legs and strappy tanks of August, but, like a summer camp romance, we know absence will only make the heart grow fonder.

So for now, we’re all about fall. Here’s how to get the most out of the season.

Transitional Jackets

What do early fall and late spring have in common? If you said very few new movie releases, you’d be correct. But also, they share the common trait of being a very particular time of year when a light jacket is all you need. And this is a good thing, because light jackets have the ability to tie an outfit together in a way very few pieces in our wardrobes can. So don’t squander the opportunity! Embrace light-jacket-season with aplomb in our Interweave Lilia jacket in an unexpected red. Worn over a dress, tailored pants, or even with jeans, the Lilia is a jacket that will actually make you excited for chillier weather.

Another great option is the vegan leather Alphonso. Buttery soft and cinched at the waist, the Alphonso makes the concept of “leather jacket season” irrelevant, as you’ll find ways to wear it all year round (as you should).

Cozy Sweaters

I don’t think I really need to talk about the appeal of cozy sweaters, so let’s just hype up some of our favorites. The Athens Half-Zip is the grab-and-go piece you need for casual outdoor dining. The Theo pullover is what you wear when you’d rather stay in bed—a bed made of the most luxurious cashmere imaginable. The Frederick cardigan is the buttery-soft desk sweater you’ve been dreaming of. The Elizabeth sweater is the versatile, layering-ready silk jersey turtleneck that you’ll wear 2-3 times a week (or more), and the Leo pullover is its chic, collared counterpart. Just like when you’re apple picking, now’s the time to fill up your basket.

Festive Colors

Beyond wine-colored nails and deep red lipstick, fall provides a full palette of moody, nature-inspired colors to play with. For subtle pops of festivity, go with a T-shirt, like the Soyoung in cranberry or the Mia in deep sea, under a more neutral jacket. A turtleneck, like the Axam T-shirt in camel, is stunning with a simple pair of black pants or jeans (especially with the aforementioned deep red lipstick). For evergreen appeal and a little extra warmth, you can’t go wrong with the Ellie pullover in deep juniper.

Daring Dresses

Don’t let summer have all the fun. Fall is a great time to don a dress, either as a layer or as a statement. The Vincent dress combines everything special about our jardigan knit (stretchiness, wrinkle-resistance) with a sleek silhouette. It can be worn on its own or under a jacket (like the Alphonso!), sweater, or even a classic jardigan. For an event-ready dress that really makes an entrance, we love the Kelsey in an quintessentially autumnal garnet.

The Return of Pants

Maybe you’re excited for the change of season because you’re ready to wear pants again? While we have all sorts of terrific new trousers, the Delaney jogger looks and feels extra luxurious (with all of the comfort of your favorite sweatpants). And if it’s leggings you’re after, the Stella legging is the polished and put-together, office-friendly pair you’ll wear from now until Memorial Day.

Sensible but Sensational Flats

We love a summer sandal, but there’s just something so comforting about our favorite pair of fall flats. When it’s warm enough that you don’t need socks but cool enough that you want to cover your toes, we recommend reaching for the Grace Loafers in our new leopard suede. The leopard print showcases our favorite color combo of the moment (black and brown), and the extra layer of Poron™ memory foam means they’ll easily pass the wear-all-day test.

Autumnal Accessories

Between the silk scarves, fun hats, and bold jewelry, fall is easily the best season for accessories. Right now we’re loving the brown and ivory Mardy earrings, as they’re neutral enough to wear with almost any other color combo. We’re also enjoying the Sedgwick belt, and we’re using it to add dimension and an unexpected pop of suede.

Tights!

Yes, it’s almost time to break out the tights! When we aren’t ready to fully pack up our favorite summer dresses and skirts, but the nip in the air is undeniable, we’re thankful to have these high-quality Threads tights at the ready.
