From “The Crown” to “The Queen’s Gambit:” How to Dress Like Our Favorite TV Heroines of 2020
While we were living in loungewear, the women on TV dressed better than ever.
During the pandemic, the escapist feelings I get from watching TV have reached new levels. Temporarily stepping into a world in which only doctors wear masks and crowded grocery stores are annoying (as opposed to terrifying) is weirdly cathartic, and I’ve been putting my Netflix subscription to work over the past 10 months. Through my enthusiastic viewing habits, I’ve also noticed something: Despite the fact that many of us have been living in loungewear this year, the leading ladies on my screen are dressed more sharply than ever, and they look great. Inspired, I decided to recreate five of my favorite on-screen outfits using M.M. pieces.
Grace Fraser in The Undoing
I have one episode of The Undoing left, and I’m really hoping that Grace Fraser (Nicole Kidman) doesn’t end up being the murderer—because her outfits are amazing, and I don’t want to feel weird about copying them. Grace often takes long walks through New York City, and many of her outfits include bold, memorable coats. This one, in particular, reminded me of M.M.’s reversible Cleo coat. Pair it with the Antoinette top in dash plaid to emulate the rich hues that characterize Grace’s wardrobe, and finish the look with the sexy Curie pants and Lana boots.

Letitia “Leti” Lewis in Lovecraft Country
What I love most about Leti Lewis’s (Jurnee Smollett) outfits is that they reflect her personality. She’s outgoing, funny, and confident—and in turn, her wardrobe is full of splashy colors, playful design details, and form-fitting silhouettes. Get her look by pairing the skinny Marais pants in raspberry with the Antonia top and Ella sandals. Leti’s outfits always have a finishing touch that ties everything together—and in this look, the Capri earrings are just the thing.

Princess Diana in The Crown
If you haven’t dug into season four of The Crown yet, I highly recommend putting it on your holiday break to-do list—not least because the recreations of Princess Diana’s real-life iconic looks are just so good. While Diana (Emma Corrin) wears plenty of eye-catching outfits throughout the season, I found her more subtle, timeless looks to be the most memorable. To emulate this elegant ensemble, try our Arden jacket and Astor skirt in wool herringbone, which put a modern twist on classic shapes. Complete your look with the machine-washable Bridget top, the Ginger pumps, and the pearl Ponza earrings.

Insecure’s Molly Carter (Yvonne Orji) has a distinct style that’s usually associated with the sharp suits she wears to work at her law firm. But I wanted to take a minute to appreciate her next-level date-night looks. Molly loves off-the-clock outfits that are sexy yet tasteful, so I could totally see her wearing our Dylan dress and Ella sandals for her next event. Her outfits always have a bit of subtle sparkle, and the Asscher-Cut necklace would be right up her alley.

Beth Harmon in The Queen’s Gambit
In The Queen’s Gambit, chess prodigy Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) is often the only woman in a room full of men, which makes her sophisticated style choices even more satisfying to watch. For a modern version of her mid-’60s style, tuck the plaid Eudora top into the A-line Rowley skirt, and wear the Plisse scarf as a headband. Slip on your Irene slingbacks, and you’ll be ready to strut into any competition—and win.
