How Five Influential Women Are Bringing More Magic Into Their Everyday

Plus, the M.M. pieces they can’t live without.

By Emma Steinbergs

Em Roberts’s podcast, The Big Move, was inspired by her decision to uproot her life and move from NYC to London back in 2017. In the years since, her podcast has become a motivating resource for women, featuring entrepreneurs and industry experts. There’s an obvious overlap between the career-related topics Em covers in her conversations and those we discuss here on the M Dash,  so we were absolutely thrilled when we had the opportunity to bring our communities together to watch one of her live recordings at our Upper East Side store.

In the episode, which you can now listen to here, Em chatted with four women of influence: photographer and content creator Olivia Joan, entrepreneur and author Hitha Palepu, wealth advisor Kristin O’Keeffe Merrick, and executive coach Alex Caiola. Seated amongst racks of clothing and a few dozen guests, all five women leaned into the intimate environment, opening up about everything from imposter syndrome to setting boundaries.

To close out the evening on a more playful note, we caught up with each panelist individually and asked them two quick-fire questions: (1) What are you wearing? (2) What’s one way you’re bringing magic to your everyday? (We’ve been thinking about the second one a lot this fall, thanks to the M.M.LaFleur Roadshow.) Their answers below.

Host of The Big Move

Em Roberts

What are you wearing?
“I’m wearing the Noa dress. It’s vegan leather and matches back to my Nicky jacket. I love this lovely shade of brown.”

What’s one way you’re bringing magic to your everyday?
“I bring magic into my day when my kids go to bed… It’s my only quiet time. To be quite honest, I’m opening a pumpkin beer, doing laundry, and just taking a beat for myself.”

Photographer and content creator

Olivia Joan

What are you wearing?
“I’m wearing an Acne Studios men’s blazer, the McKenzie sweater—the softest sweater I own—a MANGO belt, Reformation jeans, and Gucci loafers.

What’s one way you’re bringing magic to your everyday?
“Honestly, as corny as it sounds, the most magical moments are those I spend with myself and take time to unwind. Being a content creator, I’m constantly with other people, and there are times I forget to prioritize myself, so I’ve had to re-learn that alone time can be a magical thing. I’ve been taking myself out to solo dinners a lot lately.”

Author, entrepreneur, and lifestyle blogger

Hitha Palepu

What are you wearing?
“I’m wearing this leopard-print Tatum top—which is the best—the Zhou culottes, and the Ginger pumps. They’re the most comfortable heels in the world!”

What’s one way you’re bringing magic to your everyday?
“I’ve been playing the Practical Magic soundtrack on repeat. It’s my October tradition—in addition to reading all my favorite witchy books, because they make me happy during spooky season.”

Hitha Palepu
Kristin O’Keeffe Merrick

Wealth advisor

Kristin O’Keeffe Merrick

What are you wearing?
“I’m wearing the houndstooth Yiyan jacket and the Milo jeans, which are fun because—just look!—they’re perfectly fitted to my hips and then have this wonderful flare. Also, I just discovered something new about these pants: they self-hem. Genius.”

What’s one way you’re bringing magic to your everyday?
“I’m trying to read every day, at least before bed and sometimes throughout the day. I know that’s not a super-original goal, but it brings me a lot of joy.”

Executive coach

Alex Caiola

What are you wearing?
“I’m wearing my beloved Yiyan jacket, the Leslie T-shirt, and FRAME jeans.”

What’s one way you’re bringing magic to your everyday?
“I’ve invited some magic in by wearing crystals today. My bracelet is carnelian, this necklace is a tiger’s eye, and then I have this little high priestess pendant, which just reminds me to put on my mental ‘crown’ of confidence.”
