The Story Behind Our Polygiene® Pieces

At MM.LaFleur, we’re always talking about how we can improve the products our customers already love—we’ll say, “We know our customers are fans of the Etsuko; how can we make it even better for them?” That’s why we’ve treated a selection of our favorite products with Polygiene®, an anti-odor finish. What does that mean, exactly? The fabric won’t hold smells, so you can wear your piece multiple times before tossing it in the washing machine—saving both time and water! We sat down with Audrey O’Brien, MM’s Director of Fabric Research & Development, to find out more.
What is Polygiene, exactly?
Polygiene is an anti-odor finish that prevents odor from building up in your garments. A lot of activewear brands use it in their products, and here at MM, we wanted professional women to have the benefits of activewear. In our Polygiene-treated pieces, you can hustle on your commute and sit through a long meeting a stuffy conference room without having to worry about smelly garments.
How does it work?
Polygiene is made up of recycled silver that’s been broken down into a silver compound. It kills the bacteria that causes body odor. This bacteria binds to synthetic fibers, and the Polygiene finish prevents the bacteria from eating away at your clothing.
How is the finish applied to clothes?
The finish is in liquid form and is applied during final stages of fabric production.
Can I smell or feel it?
Nope! There’s no scent or hand-feel difference. Products treated with Polygiene will look and feel exactly like the MM products you know and love—they’ll just have this secret benefit.
Aside from odor prevention, what are the other benefits?
Products treated with Polygiene can be washed less frequently than traditional garments, so there’s an environmental benefit. The Polygiene finish lasts through the entire life of a garment, so you’ll get tons of mileage out of each piece.
Polygiene’s permanent textile treatment is bluesign® approved which means it meets rigorous independent environmental and product life cycle standards. It is also on the Oeko-tex list (I-IV) of independently tested and certified products.
The treatment is manufactured in the EU with minimal use of resources and conforms to strict environmental regulations. It is based on low concentrations of silver salt which is recovered from recycled silver in electronics waste. Polygiene is not nano-silver.
