8 Pieces to Invest in if You Want to Save Money This Year

Reframe the way you think about shopping, and your wallet will thank you in the long run.

By Madeleine Kim

About a year ago, I started thinking about my clothing purchases in terms of cost per wear, and it completely changed the way I shop and dress. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the concept of cost per wear, it’s a simple formula: an item’s cost per wear is the cost of the item, divided by the number of times you wear it. Thinking about my wardrobe this way made me see the value I was—or, in some cases, wasn’t—getting out of my clothes and helped me make wiser decisions about how to spend my money (never again shall I drop $34.95 on a halter top I have nowhere to wear, just because it’s on sale).

If you’re trying to build a cost-efficient wardrobe, you should focus on three things. First, invest in high-quality pieces that will last through plenty of wears and washes. Second, make sure you only buy pieces you really like, because it’s 2021 and you deserve to love everything you put on your body. And third, focus on building a capsule wardrobe full of pieces that easily mix and match to maximize your outfit options.

Ready to get started? Look no further than The Always Capsule, an eight-piece selection of styles that go together beautifully and are just the thing to wear, well, always. For a limited time, you can get 15% off when you buy 2+ pieces in any color (enter the code NOWANDTHEN at checkout)—which means your cost per wear will be even lower. I love a good chart, so below, I’ve demonstrated what your cost per wear could look like for these items, assuming (conservatively) that you’ll have them for five years.

Now that we’re done doing math, it’s time for the fun part: outfits! Here are just a few ways you can style The Always Capsule.

Keep It Simple

Sometimes, less is more. For days when you want to keep things simple, the Lagarde shirt and Axam T-shirt can both be paired with the Hockley jeans or the Colby joggers for an easy, polished look.

Get Cozy

Need an extra bit of warmth? The Pima-cotton Axam turtleneck and cashmere Judith hoodie have you covered. Try layering the Axam under lightweight shirts like the Lagarde, and wear the Judith with the Moreland jacket when you’re feeling chilly.

(Track)suit Up

The Moreland jacket paired with the Colby joggers is kind of like the grown-up, work-appropriate version of a tracksuit, thanks to comfy, washable fabric, wrinkle-resistance, and an elastic waistband. Swap in the Hockley jeans for some contrast.

Dress without Stress

Who cares if you have nowhere to go? There’s something so satisfying about putting on a dress and being done. The Emily dress has subtle design details (a slight A-line shape and square neckline) that mean the styling is done for you—but if you want to have fun with it, accessories are always a good idea.
