5 Waist-Up Outfits to Make WFH More Interesting

Video conferencing doesn’t need to be boring.

By Madeleine Kim

If you find joy in expressing yourself through clothing, you may feel creatively stunted by the sweatsuits and mullet outfits that have taken over our video-conferencing, socially distanced existence. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Think of the waist-up version of yourself not as a sartorial cage, but as a blank canvas, ready to come alive. It’s time to use the confines of that low-resolution rectangle to experiment with new pairings, have fun with accessories, and make your day a little more interesting.

Here are five looks to try, curated by our Brand Stylist, Nyjerah.

Monday

Monochromatic Magic

Nyjerah always says that dressing in monochrome is the easiest way to look chic without trying too hard, and this ensemble proves her right. Start with a comfortable top in a solid color, then add accessories in similar shades. It’s that easy! Combining statement pieces—like wearing a billowy top and bold earrings—creates extra impact. Pairs well with stretchy pants and drinking coffee very carefully.

Tuesday

Lightweight Layering

Tuesdays tend to be meeting-heavy at M.M., so a shirt with a collar feels right. Nyjerah’s style errs on the casual side, and she likes to wear the Blake unbuttoned and knotted over the Giulia top to dress things down a bit. Pull it all together with gold hoops—simple, but effective. This look is part French-countryside vacation, part back-to-school chic. Pairs well with comfy trousers and buying a fancy notebook, confident that this will be the year you get into bullet journaling.

Wednesday

Hot and Cold

Working from home is a mixed bag. So why not pair cool colors with warm? The Giulia top in bamboo and Briar earrings in turquoise have cool undertones, and pairing them with the warm-hued Anna jacket makes for a dynamic look. Even better: Each of these pieces features subtle shade variation, making your outfit that much more interesting. Pairs well with culottes and ogling houses with yards on Zillow.

Thursday

Go for Gold

Sometimes more is more. The next time you need a pick-me-up, try throwing on a few necklaces and your favorite hoops (bonus points for matching hair clips). Pendant-style necklaces, like the single bezel and asscher-cut necklaces, work well with V-necks that echo their shape. The sleek, structured Willow vest fits the bill. Pairs well with boyfriend jeans and making sure you’re registered to vote.

Friday

Nuanced Navy

Pairing black and navy isn’t just acceptable—it’s Parisian-approved. This outfit is polished enough for that big Zoom meeting, but comfortable enough that you won’t want to change when it’s over. The bold Briar earrings pack an extra punch over video chat, while the subtle stripes of the Doris dress help create contrast on your webcam. Pairs well with strappy sandals and calling your mom.
