5 Tricks to Keep You Looking Put Together at Work

March 23, 2018 | Filed in: Your Closet

MM stylist Makenna spends her days putting together Bento Boxes and emailing her customers with recommendations from our new collection, but she’s also a bit of a wardrobe MacGyver. “Working at MM has made getting dressed a breeze, but I still struggle with the occasional wardrobe malfunction at work (deodorant stains that somehow end up on my skirt, or tights that become electrically charged with static cling),” she says. “Through my conversations with customers, I’ve realized how common (and mutually frustrating!) these issues are.” Below, Makenna shares her ingenious tricks for remaining polished throughout the workday.

1. Pesky Deodorant Stains

The situation: You have a big interview coming up, and after a few FaceTime sessions with your most stylish friend, you’ve landed on the winning outfit. The morning of the interview, you pull on the dress ever so carefully and step in front of the mirror—only to notice a giant deodorant streak.

The solution: I used to tackle deodorant stains by dabbing them with a damp paper towel, with abysmal results. When I started working at MM, another stylist introduced me to these magical sponges. Simply rub the sponge on the stain, and the deodorant miraculously disappears. It comes in a nice little kit, so you can throw it in your purse on your way out the door.

2. A Dress That Rides Up

The situation: The good news: You got a raise, and it’s just the excuse you need to purchase the dress you’ve been eyeing. You wear it to work the next day, and receive several compliments from your co-workers. The bad news: The dress keeps riding up, forcing you to tug at the hem when no one’s looking.

The solution: There’s an unlikely solve for this one: hairspray. Spray just a bit on your leg where your dress or skirt hits, and your hemline should stay in place all day.

3. Impossible-to-Reach Back Zippers

The situation: You usually rely on your significant other if you need help zipping up your dresses, but this morning, you snoozed your alarm one too many times and they’re long gone by the time you get dressed.

The solution: To my delight, I’ve discovered there is a tool designed to combat this exact issue—a wand that hooks onto your zipper, lengthening your reach. If you’re more of a DIY type, you can also tie a bit of string or ribbon to a safety pin, attach the safety pin to your zipper, and pull the string up. (Don’t forget to unfasten the safety pin once your dress is zipped!)

4. Annoying Static Cling

The situation: You had optimistically packed away your tights for the season, when lo and behold, another cold front has rolled in. You pull them on under your go-to LBD for a day of back-to-back meetings. Maddeningly, the tights are full of static—and you’re shocking everything (and everyone) you come in contact with.

The solution: Grab an anti-static dryer sheet and run it over the outside of your tights. Bonus: These sheets can also remove static from hair.

5. Lint, Fuzz, and Fur

The situation: You’re giving a big presentation to your company’s executive team, and you did a dress rehearsal for your cat last night—not realizing that Fang was lounging on top of your favorite power dress while you walked her through the deck.

The solution: When a lint roller is nowhere to be found, opt for a strip of Scotch or masking tape. Stick the tape to the problem areas of your dress, lift up, and repeat as needed.
