How to Find a T-Shirt That Actually Fits

Everyone should own a high-quality T-shirt that fits beautifully and goes with everything. Here’s how to find the right one.

It doesn’t matter where you work—in a business-formal corporate office, at your kitchen table, on a boat, with a goat—everyone should own a high-quality T-shirt that fits beautifully and goes with everything. But how to find the right one? If you’re shopping on the M.M. website, everything you see is top-notch quality (think: comfortable, functional fabrics and silhouettes that were fitted over and over to achieve the best design possible)—so you don’t have to worry about that part.

And as for fit? That’s where our stylists come in. With their help, we’ve identified the two best T-shirts (one for everyday wear, one for elevated occasions) for the five most common body types.

For Heart Shapes

If your bust is proportionally larger than your hips, you likely have a heart body type. Look for tops with plenty of stretch, room through the bust, or both. When you’re in the mood for sleeves, the scoop-neck Marcia T-shirt would be a great choice, thanks to its open neckline and easygoing fabric. For a fun splash of color, try the Avi T-shirt in ube, whose scoopneck gives it a more elevated look than a classic tee.

For Pear Shapes

If your hips are proportionally larger than your top half, you likely have a pear body type. The chic Jett tank would be an excellent choice for you, because it has tailored fit through the bust and waist. For a more sculptural look, reach for the Alina T-shirt, an elevated take on a muscle tee that makes your outfit instantly interesting.

For Straight Shapes

If your bust and hips are proportionally similar and your silhouette is a straight line from top to bottom, you likely have a straight body type. The classic Paige tank will make a reliable go-to, and you can wear it tucked or untucked, depending on the rest of your outfit. For days when you’re feeling lazy but want to look like you tried, go for the cozy Raquel T-shirt, whose wide, ribbed neckline offers a more luxe look than a typical tee.

For Oval Shapes

If you have less distinction between your bust, waist, and hips and a fuller midsection, you likely have an oval body type. For your everyday T-shirt needs, the Leslie will provide room through the midsection without feeling oversized. When you want something a little dressier, wear the easy-to-layer Axam turtleneck, which offers stretchy and gorgeous ribbed fabric.

For Hourglass Shapes

If your shoulders align with your hips and create a defined waistline, you likely have an hourglass body type. The fitted Chana T-shirt will complement your shape, plus it’s made from incredibly soft ribbed pima cotton. For a longer sleeved option, reach for the Soyoung tee, which features an open but still full-coverage neckline.

P.S. Wondering what to pair with your new tees? These pants look great on every body type.
