3 Stylists, 3 Body Types, 3 Great Pants

On the scale of joylessness, hunting down flattering work pants is up there with going to the DMV—a time-consuming, tedious, and sometimes fruitless endeavor. That’s why we’ve streamlined the process with a comprehensive guide to which of our pants work best on different body types. For the third part of our pants series, we recruited three MM stylists to model their favorites. (Spoiler: The culotte was a dark horse winner.) See their picks, below.

1. Sara Trautz

The Foster is my favorite pant at MM; my go-to silhouette is skinny pants with a looser blouse, worn untucked. I’m 5’10”, so when it comes to clothes, I always look for length. I’m also heart-shaped, with a larger bust, so I like outfits that highlight my legs and provide more coverage on top. On me, the Fosters are a bit cropped, but they work well that way—they’re slightly pegged at the ankle, so they don’t look like flood pants. They’re tight but also very comfortable, like I could wear them to yoga.

The Ficchi culottes aren’t something I’d normally be drawn to—I figured they’d look like bad capri pants on me, like what I wore in fourth grade. But the longer rise accentuates my waist nicely, especially with a tucked-in shirt. Because the hem is cropped on purpose, I don’t have to worry about them looking too short, or whether to go with heels or flats. They’re also a tiny bit stretchy, and feel great.

2. Taylor Purcell

The Dupont trousers hits me at the smallest part of my waist and then flow out perfectly—I love them. I’m petite and slightly pear-shaped, so I like long, clean lines. These are wide-leg, but they’re not bell-bottoms, and they make me look much taller than 5’3″. I also like the modern, crisp look of flat-front pants. I always wear these with a fitted top, tucked in.

At first, I thought the Ficchi culottes would overwhelm my frame, but I was surprised by how wearable they are. With a shorter top and heels, they have an elongating effect. I sized down to a 2 so that I could wear them higher up on my waist; in my normal size (4), they’re more slouchy and relaxed. 

3. Lena Ficchi
