A 6-Piece Starter Work Wardrobe for Recent Grads
June 25, 2016
You graduated from college and landed your first job, so in our book, you’re already a highly accomplished human. Well done. But now comes the mildly panic-inducing part: figuring out what to wear to said job.
Our advice: Start with a few high-quality pieces in neutral colors. It might seem counterintuitive, but when you’re working with a limited budget, investing in value is the smartest move you can make.
Below, we give you six staples that can be mixed and matched to create six office-ready outfits you’ll still be wearing long after you’ve gotten your first promotion. Your ultimate work wardrobe starts here.
Outfit 1: C + D + F
Word to the wise: Keep things buttoned-up and classic for your first day on the job. Start with a subtly textured skirt and a simple shell, and finish your look with a structured jardigan. (You can always take it off if you want to loosen up later in the day.)
Outfit 2: A + B
After spending four years in jeans, you’re right to be wary of “work pants” or, god forbid, “slacks.” We don’t blame you, but the Nakamura trouser will quell your fears: It’s slim, tailored, and machine-washable. Pair it with a beautifully draped blouse for a can’t-go-wrong look.
Outfit 3: E
When it comes to getting ready in the morning, there’s nothing easier than a simple shift dress in a sophisticated shape. Or as we like to call it: an adult onesie.
Outfit 4: B + D + F
We’re guessing you didn’t wear a ton of pantsuits as an undergrad. Ease into the corporate world in a suit-like look that’s actually kind of cool. Pair a comfy knit jardigan with a versatile top and a tailored pant. Pull it all together with a reversible belt.
Outfit 5: A + C
Remember your first-day skirt? And that draped blouse? Style them together for an elegant everyday look. Accessorize with a simple bracelet and hoops.
Outfit 6: E + F
When in doubt, pair a simple dress with a sharp jacket. The look will take you from day to night, and you’ll be ready when your boss pulls you into an unexpected client meeting (go you—that’s a good sign).
