Ask a Stylist: Which Silhouettes Will Work Best for My Body Type?
May 26, 2016
Customer question: I’m never sure which styles will work for my body type. Where do I start?
MM.LaFleur stylist Alex says: So glad you asked! This is a question we tackle every single day at MM.LaFleur. I absolutely love working with customers to find the styles and silhouettes that will make them feel their best. Below, I asked some of my co-workers to show how various MM dresses look on different body types. Curious to see how they’d look on you? The Nisa Dress
Annabel (Customer Associate, size 8, 5’11”): I love the slight V-neckline and cap sleeves on this dress. They give structure while still looking clean and simple.
Annie (Chief Marketing Officer, size 6, 5’8″): I’m a curvy mom, so I need things that play into my curves rather than try to cover them up. Don’t get me wrong—my postpartum tummy is definitely more… robust. But I actually like that the little belt of this dress puts the emphasis on the waist. It helps create shape and draws the eye to the right place.
Catherine (Stylist, size 2, 5’4″): I like pieces that are tailored but not tight, so I can comfortably sit cross-legged. I have a small frame but a large bust, so I avoid “sack-style” dresses that add volume on top. The Nisa is great because it has room through the bust but is tailored at the shoulders, so it’s not too tight or too loose. I wear it on days when I need to look put-together—usually with kitten heels so I can enjoy my walk to the office.
The Rachel Dress
Maria (Digital Strategist, size 8, 5’8”): I’m pear-shaped, and I like slim silhouettes that show off my shape. This materials give me (much needed!) stretch through the hips, while still elongating the overall line of my body. I usually pair it with a blazer or sweater for work.
Rachel (Director of Offline Retail, size 4, 5’2″): I own this style in three colors—and not just because it’s my namesake dress! Since I’m petite and curvy, I get lost in anything over-sized or boxy. I love that this dress hugs my curves in a flattering manner. The seaming is strategic and highlights the waist, and the fabric is thick enough to smooth and hide imperfections. It’s perfect for a cocktail party.
Hanna (Offline Retail Coordinator, size 14, 5’3″): I gravitate towards curve-hugging and A-line styles. Might as well flaunt what I’ve got! I love the Rachel because it’s so comfy and versatile. I can dress it up with heels or down with flats. I can even throw a cool kimono or sweater on top and wear it on the weekend. It’s stretchy but it makes me feel “held in” in my lumpy areas.
The Emily Dress
Annabel (Customer Associate, size 8, 5’11”): I have a broad back, but I love shift dresses, and this one falls really nicely. It’s a bit shorter on me than it is on some people, so I would wear it with tights.
Annie (Chief Marketing Officer, size 6, 5’8″): Can I tell you a secret? When I first saw the design for this dress, I thought, “Oh no.” Most busty ladies will tell you that we run a million miles from a high neckline. And yet, when I put it on, it was magical. It flatters my hips and slims my legs, and the neckline is surprisingly streamlining.
Hanna (Offline Retail Coordinator, size 14, 5’3″): I tend to avoid shifts as they make me look bigger, but this one has just enough flare and attitude. I also love the elbow-length sleeve; it’s easy to move in, especially when I’m running around at one of our pop-up events. It can be tough to find good pieces when you’re petite and curvy, but the Emily checks all the boxes.
