Ladies in Red

When it comes to colors, red is an iconic—and intimidating—one. We’ve preached our love for versatile neutrals, but donning red is undeniably a power move. Wearing it is a bolder choice than an all-black uniform, but incorporating red into your wardrobe is more seamless than you may think. Our Pre-Fall Collection fully embraces the red spectrum, from deep, burgundy hues to bright, cherry tones. Read on to see how three MM team members wear our favorite fall color.

Stephanie, Summer Intern

Stephanie wears the Sant Ambroeus 2.0 jardigan in chestnut, the Peggy top in ruby, the Harlem skirt in chestnut, the Small Victory necklace, and the Telesto earrings.

Red reasoning: Full disclosure: I never wear red. I tend to stick to dark, neutral colors; black and navy make up 90% of my wardrobe. I usually think red is too bold a color for me, but our Pre-Fall Collection includes red tones that are more muted, like pomegranate and chestnut, that I feel comfortable incorporating into my wardrobe.

Why it works: I love this outfit because it’s a true power suit, but the pieces also have a chic, feminine touch. I adore the silhouette of the Harlem skirt. I usually prefer for my skirts to hit above the knee, but the longer length here is elegant and flattering. The chestnut skirt and jardigan balance out the bright color of the Peggy top and make it pop.

Where to wear it: To a more formal event on my college campus, like a networking session or career fair. Afterwards, I’d take off the Sant Ambroeus for a date or to go out with my friends. 

Sarah Kate, Stylist

Red reasoning: I trot out my red pieces when I want to feel confident. Wearing red brightens up my naturally pale complexion, and it automatically makes me feel warm. I see red as the color for someone who commands the room, is up for anything, and radiates competence.

Why it works: The Etsuko is my favorite MM dress—I’m a big fan of the deep pockets—and the claret shade and longer sleeves make it an ideal piece to transition into fall. The contrast belt creates nice definition at the waist, and means you don’t have to worry about accessorizing.

Where to wear it: I regularly wear the Etsuko to work, and as we head into fall weather, the warm color is a great way to rebel against overcast skies. This dress is perfect for days when I decide to take the long way home and end up wandering into a bookstore or meeting a friend for dinner—it’s so comfortable that I kind of forget I’m wearing work clothes.

Red reasoning: I just got my MBA from Cornell (go Big Red!), so for the past few years, I’ve incorporated a lot more red into my wardrobe. Typically, though, I wear a lot of neutrals during the workweek, and I love the idea of mixing red in as an accent color. 

Why it works: The pomegranate color of the Bourgeois blouse is a rich, dark shade of red, so it doesn’t feel overly bold. Paired with a neutral pair of pants, this top is a great way to add a dose of color without being distracting. Plus, the pomegranate shade is surprisingly versatile—I love that I can wear it with a pair of fashion-forward shoes.

Where to wear it: This outfit is more colorful than my usual work uniform, and I can’t wait to wear it to the office. It would also look right at home at post-work drinks with friends.
