The Woman Behind the Dress: Meet Rachel

December 30, 2016 | Filed in: Humans of MM

Here at MM.LaFleur, we name our dresses after the brilliant employees who make this company great. Case in point: Rachel Mann, our fearless Director of Offline Retail. Rachel joined MM in 2013 as employee number two, ran many a trunk show in her early days, and now oversees our beautiful New York City showroom and a full pop-up schedule that takes our team across the country every month.

The Rachel dress is an MM classic, and has seen 13 color iterations since the original design in 2014. Rachel herself owns four of them: “My first one was black; it was a sample. The next one was in kalamata [a brown shade], then snow, and then cornflower blue [pictured].” Clad in her namesake, Rachel has co-hosted a white party at the New York City Ballet, a high tea in Dallas (in cowboy boots, of course), and generally kicked ass.

When it comes to the details, no one says it better than Rachel herself:

How did you pick your dress? “Back in the day, our designer Miyako chose the dress for the woman. I remember her telling me that this was going to be the Rachel because it was ‘sexy, but still professional.’ I hate to be cliché, but I’m a ‘work-hard, play-hard’ gal, so I like a dress that’s comfortable enough to sit in at work for 10 hours, and that I can freshen up to grab a cocktail with friends or sit down to a nice dinner.”

What do you love about your dress? It’s stretchy and comfortable, it’s the perfect cut for my petite, hourglass shape, and the V-shaped neckline is unique—I don’t have any other dresses like it.”

If you could put one woman in your dress, who would it be? Marion Cotillard.”
