See Our Pre-Fall Collection in Action

August 15, 2017 | Filed in: Your Closet

Our 2017 Pre-Fall Collection is here, in all its soft, sculptural glory. Look forward to Italian houndstooth suiting, touchable gray twill, and hourglass silhouettes—plus a light-up-the-room pomegranate red (because summer isn’t over just yet). Below, see a behind-the-scenes video from our collection shoot, and read about MM creative director Miyako Nakamura’s inspiration for the designs—as well as her tips for styling them.

Bold Reds

Pre-Fall was the first season I worked on after I came back from maternity leave, and in honor of my daughter, I wanted to do a beautiful, rich red. My daughter’s name, Koh, translates as “lipstick red”—it’s the pigment that’s used for lipstick—so that’s the color I was looking for.

In terms of styling, I want these red looks to be bold. Last year, I went through a period when I felt that our clothes could be stronger—because our women are strong. Everyone needs a few statement pieces in her closet, and I was thinking, “How chic would it be if our woman wore a gray suit—but with a red underpinning?” Or maybe, every once and a while, she wears this striking red dress.

Hourglass Shapes

This season’s designs have a curve to them. Even the looser pieces, like the Tina dress, aren’t baggy—they’re fitted to show the waist. Our knit skirts have a slight kick at the hem, so they’re a more shapely alternative to the pencil skirt. You can wear them with a matching jardigan for a beautiful knit suit.

The New Jacket

For our latest jacket, the Wilson, I wanted something nipped at the waist, with a rounded shoulder, almost 1950s-inspired. With our past jackets, we’ve always had something more easy-fitting rather than structured, so I wanted to create something more tailored. I also wanted to cut it from something stretchy that you can move in. A lot of the vintage pieces are great, but they’re very restrictive. We landed on this soft, comfortable Italian knit that looks gray but is actually a very fine houndstooth. It took a long time to finalize the jacket—we worked hard to perfect the silhouette so that it would work on a range of different body types.

You can wear this jacket as part of a suit; I also think it looks so chic with jeans and a white T-shirt, almost like how women wear Chanel tweed jackets, but a more modern version. It also looks very polished with a wide-legged black trouser and a beautiful blouse. You can wear it with black and white and any color.
