Which Piece Matches Your Personality?

If M.M. pieces were people, we just know they’d have intriguing personalities.

By Madeleine Kim

Our summer collection is full of pieces with personality, thanks to inventive prints, splashy colors, and unexpected silhouettes. But what if the pieces in your closet actually had personalities? I’m talking likes, dislikes, backstories, goals, quirks, and all. This might be the isolation talking, but here are five M.M. pieces I’m ready to befriend.

1.

The All-Knowing Extrovert

The Inez dress is that friend who seems to know everything (but not in an obnoxious way). She’s the person you text when you’re making a new recipe and aren’t sure if you can sub in oat milk—and the one you ask for feedback on all your cover letters. During quarantine, she has read precisely twelve books, sent hand-drawn birthday cards to five friends, and given names to three of her houseplants (Felix, Persimmon, and Vanessa). She has Zooey-Deschanel levels of charm, she takes bi-weekly sound baths, and she’s always down for a socially-distanced picnic.

2.

The Woman About Town

The Jie jacket has a personal-finance spreadsheet that she updates monthly, equally great relationships with all three of her siblings, and a dark secret: She’s deeply obsessed with The Bachelor. She’s always the one who takes the lead on planning group trips—not only because she’s a self-proclaimed type-A, but also because she has a knack for finding the chicest spots in any city. (She used to live in Paris, after all.) With all business travel on hold, she’s redirected her energy toward co-hosting elaborately-planned virtual trivia nights with her wife, Lindsay, in which losers are required to make a small donation to a charity of their choice.

3.

The Political Poet

The Sloane top worked in politics for years, but then realized she’d rather be the poet laureate than the president. Since then, she’s developed a prolific collection of haikus—and a popular fashion newsletter that she writes anonymously. Sloane considers herself to be disorganized, but what she lacks in list-making abilities, she makes up for in creativity, big-picture thinking, and handwriting that looks like a font. During quarantine, she’s been training for a marathon. She probably won’t sign up for an official race—she just wants to see if she can run 26 miles.

4.

The Resourceful World Traveler

The Zhou culotte speaks English, French, Spanish, and Arabic—but she doesn’t bust out the accent to order a croissant. She’s always on the move: If she’s not hopping on a plane to visit one of her many international friends (and lovers), you can find her browsing antiques at an outdoor market, chopping up an old dress to make something new, or befriending local fauna. As you can imagine, shelter-in-place orders were a bit of a blow to her lifestyle. Ever-adaptable, she made the most of it by getting really into the Bon Appétit YouTube channel—and penning handwritten letters, which, to date, she’s sent to friends in nine countries and one principality.

5.

The Loyal Independent

The Oshima isn’t really into astrology, but she loves the fact that she’s a Scorpio. She’s a tough cookie, yet she always cries during the 7pm cheer for New York’s essential workers. If she’s your friend, she’s your ride-or-die: Oshima will buy you pizza when you’re sad, warn the new person you’re dating that they better not hurt you, and road-trip with you when you move across the country. That said, she cherishes her alone time and takes an annual solo hiking trip, both to reflect on the year and to listen to raunchy podcasts. Her biggest quarantine accomplishment? Regrowing scallions—but having the self-restraint not to Instagram them.
