How to Transition Five Classic Pieces From Summer to Fall

August 11, 2017 | Filed in: Your Closet

We’re officially entering back-to-school season, which means it’s also officially “What is this weather and how do I dress for it?” season. When some days are sweltering and others call for a sweater (and even though you don’t want summer to end, you’re weirdly excited for fall clothes—what’s that about?), navigating your closet is a drag. Our advice: Invest in a few classic styles you can wear year-round, and then add layers when the temperatures drop. Read on to see how we transition five of our tried-and-true staples from summer to autumn.

The Didion 3.0 top in black

Summer

Fall

As they say, black goes with everything, and we’re not about to argue. For hotter months, brighten up the Didion 3.0 top with the Oshima pant in russet, dangly earrings, and sleek sunglasses. Come September, pair it with the Harlem skirt and Woolf jardigan in chestnut (available next week!) for an elegant, unexpected suit.

The Rowling top in birch

Summer

Fall

The versatile Rowling top is the ideal building block for polished outfits any time of year. Pair it with a warm-toned skirt for the summer, and round out the ensemble with gold accessories. When the fall hits, swap out persimmon for jewel-toned pomegranate, add a belt for a tailored silhouette, and throw on the Woolf jardigan.

The Sarah 7.0 dress in black

Summer

Fall

A true jack of all trades, the Sarah 7.0 dress is the perfect canvas for any season. In warm weather, wear it with understated accessories: a light-as-a-feather scarf, elegant earrings, and classic shades. For fall, pull on a breathable layer like the Graham kimono and swap out the Breeze scarf for the Herringbone, which has more weight and coziness.

The Oshima pant in dune grass

Summer

Fall

Not sure about light colors after Labor Day? Complement the Oshima pant in dune grass with darker shades, like the stretchy Peggy top and Sant Ambroeus jardigan in black, and voila: a fall-ready ensemble. For now, try the pants with the breezy Bourgeois blouse.

The Mulberry skirt in dark clay

Summer

Fall

It’s 80 degrees right now, and the Mulberry skirt with the Didion 3.0 top in our punchy stripe fabric is looking pretty spot-on (add a pop of color with the Breeze scarf in chili flake, and chic earrings for good measure). In a few weeks, though, we might want to layer up with a neutral shell, classic cardigan, and polished wrap.
