I’m 5'2" and These Are My Go-To M.M. Outfits
Our resident petite shares the looks she’s loving this fall.
When I started my career as an M.M. stylist eight years ago, I also took on a second role: resident petite. I’m 5’2″ and a pear shape, so I often try pieces on for the design team to determine their petite-friendliness, or for customers to showcase how they look on a petite frame.
While in Massachusetts to open our new Chestnut Hill store last week, I styled some of my favorite M.M. pieces. Here are the outfits I’m loving right now.

Outfit #1
O’Hara Blazer + Leslie T-Shirt + Milo Jean
As I tell every customer I work with in our stores, the Milo jeans are my go-to pants. True story: I pooh pooh’d them when I first saw them in the office years ago because I didn’t think they’d work for my body. I now own six pairs in various colors. If you’ve been feeling the same way, I hope I can show you how lovely life could be with the Milos in your world. The adjustable hem shortens the pants to the perfect length for me to wear with sneakers, heels, or boots.
As petites, we’re not often told to pair an oversized jacket with a wider pant, and that’s why I love this look. It works for a couple reasons: First, the color blocking brings the attention and visual weight of the outfit upward. Long lengths equal lengthening, and the slightly longer body of the O’Hara blazer creates one seamless line from my shoulder to the bottom of my Milos, since they are similar widths. I’ve also balanced out the wide leg of the pant with a small heel.
Outfit #2
Koa Top + Milo Jean
The Milo jeans can also be balanced out with a more fitted top like the Koa. Whereas the O’Hara blazer and Leslie tee showcase a big top + big bottom example, this outfit is a great example of a small top + big bottom pairing. A more form-fitting top tucked into a looser bottom is a winning combination for petites. I balanced this outfit and its wider bottom with a stacked heel. While the weather is only just starting to get cooler, this outfit formula is a staple for me in the fall and winter, too—you’ll find me in an Axam + Milo combo at least twice a week.
Outfit #3
Jett Tank + Elena Culotte
After seeing that three of my favorite outfits feature wide-leg pants, I want to encourage all my petites to give them a try. I promise you, they are flattering and will work for you. The Jett tank and Elena culotte are another take on the small top + big bottom formula. As a fan of the Axam, I was thrilled to get the Jett.
I always try to ensure that my outfits are balanced so nothing is dragging me down. As a Libra, I’m always seeking balance, but it’s especially important for petites. I like to make sure that no one piece is overwhelming me. Or, if one piece is a bit “heavier” I find an item that will even my look out.
Outfit #4
Kiki Sweater + Jeans
I’ve been cuffing my jeans again. Nothing new, but I forgot how helpful this styling trick is for making sure they hit at the right place when I want to wear a sneaker or a sandal. With sneakers, I cuff my jeans to hit at my ankle. The bright ube color of the Kiki sweater brings the focus to the top of my outfit, indirectly creating length. The sweater is a heavier “weight,” so I chose a more tailored pair of jeans to balance this out.
Since it was chilly in the morning but slated to be about 80 degrees during the afternoon, I wore a white T-shirt underneath my sweater. The tee’s fitted cut allowed me to style the Kiki for the warmer part of the day by throwing it over my shoulders.
Outfit #5
Axam Turtleneck + Nene Dress
This is one of my favorite looks right now. I want to be the one to tell you to wear the maxi dress. Since I’m excited about the cooler days ahead, I styled the Nene dress over my trusty Axam turtleneck. I also wear the same slip dress over a T-shirt with sneakers. A longer-length dress was something I steered clear of for a while, but now, I find myself gravitating much more to styles like this.
Once I learned to break the so-called “style rules” that we hear as petites, getting dressed became much more fun. I hope this inspires you to try something a little outside your comfort zone, too.
