The Secret to Mastering Casual Chic

Go from loungewear to luxury with 3 easy looks.

By Madeleine Kim

We recently released our first ever cashmere hoodie, and I have to admit that when I ordered mine, I wasn’t really thinking about style. I bought the Judith hoodie to wear sprawled out on my couch near a candle that smells like nutmeg, campfire, and orange peel (or all of the above), drinking wine and reading a book. In other words, I bought it to feel luxurious, cozy, and very much off-duty.

But once I saw it in person, I changed my tune. The Judith, it turns out, is so much more than a fancy version of pajamas; with a little imagination, you can seamlessly integrate cashmere-hoodie coziness into your favorite outfits. To demonstrate, I asked our Brand Stylist, Nyjerah, to create hoodie-centric looks for Sofia, Taylor, and Kartinah—three M.M. employees with different body types and style preferences.

Sofia: Business Meets Casual

Just because you’re wearing a suit doesn’t mean you can’t be cozy. In fact, the hoodie-under-blazer look is one of our favorite trends of 2020—and one that beautifully reflects the strangeness of work-from-home dressing. Here, Sofia wears the Judith hoodie in olive zipped up under the Bennett blazer for a business-meets-casual moment. At 5’8”, she’s just the right height for our machine-washable Horton pants, which are fitted at the waist but have some room through the hips. The sexy-yet-professional Lana boots and delightfully off-kilter Luna earrings complete a look that I could totally see the female version of James Bond wearing on weekends.

Taylor: Oversized Done Right

Opting for an oversized look can make you the most stylish person in the room—but it can also be overwhelming if you’re used to wearing more tailored clothing. The key to looking sleek (rather than sloppy) is all in the details. Try the Judith hoodie in a size up from your usual, but balance it out with a fitted top underneath, like the Paige T-shirt. The Milo jeans are wide through the legs and fitted through the waist and hips, which gives your look volume without bulk (and if you’re petite like Taylor, who’s 5’2”, you can use the Milo’s self-hemming feature to achieve that perfect length). A high ponytail, shiny hoops, and a delicate necklace make the outfit feel polished and intentional.

Kartinah: Everyday Elegance

Dressing tonally (in hues from the same color family) is a surefire way to look chic, so the Judith hoodie in camel is a natural pairing for biscuit. Whether you’re working from home, going to the office, or navigating some type of hybrid situation, you know that dressing for work these days is all about balance—and the elegant Astor skirt is the perfect counterpoint to the more casual Judith hoodie. Kartinah is 5’10”, so the Astor skirt hits her just above the knee, but this style also looks great on shorter women for more of a midi look. Try this outfit the next time you want to give your go-to cozy pieces a more elevated feeling—even if you have nowhere to be.
