The Stories That Made Us

April 19, 2019 | Filed in: Your Career

It’s a packed house. Extra seats have been added to the audience. Women of all ages (plus a few men!) wait eagerly for our live storytelling event to begin. In New York, award-winning actress and producer Alysia Reiner (best known for her role on “Orange is the New Black”) takes the stage. In San Francisco, Lara Bazelon, law professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law steps up the mic. They’ve completed M.M. LaFleur’s “What Are You Made Of?” questionnaire, in which they revealed their morning routines, bad habits (like…getting hangry each afternoon), proudest moments, and more. The time has come for them to share their stories in person, alongside members of the M.M. community (with some coaching by Shannan Scarselletta, professional improviser and founder of ImproVision Consulting)  And it’s beautiful.

“We always say that it’s not about the dress, it’s about the woman wearing the dress and all that she accomplishes while wearing it,” says Jacqueline Oak, M.M.’s director of offline retail, and coordinator of the New York event. “This event was a way for us to give a platform to our community so they could share their stories.”

The storytelling event was particularly meaningful, because, just like our What Are You Made Of?” campaign, it showed there’s no one formula for success. “We wanted to feature a range of stories highlighting the many facets of the female voice,” explains Jacqueline. “Navigating career changes, balancing work life and home life, overcoming physical challenges, and embracing self-care…This event was a way for us to give a platform to our community so they could share their stories.”
