My 5 Lazy-Day Uniforms That Define ‘Power Casual™’

Meet the new dress code that quickly and elegantly balances work and life.

By Caitlin Abber

I tried writing a witty introduction for this story, but the truth is…I’m feeling sort of lazy. It’s been a long week already (it’s only Wednesday), and my schedule tomorrow is so packed with meetings, I’m already planning the takeout I’m going to order for dinner. That said, some of these meetings are important, which means I’ll have to put in a little bit of effort when I get dressed in the morning. Thankfully, I have a week’s worth of lazy-day Power Casual™ uniforms ready to go.

What is Power Casual™? Power Casual is any outfit that makes you look and feel your best, and is also comfortable, stretchy, and easy to wear. It’s not ratty T-shirts and hoodies (though we have those days, too), but rather a very M.M. approach to dressing that takes into account the way we want to be perceived (confident and stylish), our on-the-go lifestyles, and our flexible work environments. Power Casual™ is the dress code that lets us quickly and elegantly shift between work and life—especially during a time when the boundaries between the two are quickly disappearing.

Here are the lazy-day, Power Casual™ looks I wear the most.

A Color That Warms My Bones

When the week is getting the best of me, I tend to turn to blacks and ivories to keep things simple. But when I pop on the Sophie in bright medallion, something magical happens. Suddenly, it’s a crisp Sunday morning at the farmer’s market, and I’ve got my tote bag in hand, ready to purchase some apples. This cashmere sweater is like a secret weapon for the mid-week slump, so I tend to save it for the day I need it most. I like to pair the Sophie sweater with the Tinsley trousers in biscuit, just to avoid black all together.

A Hoodie That Makes Me Smile

The other day, I was in a Zoom meeting when I noticed I had pulled the hood of the Colette over my head like a teenager. It seemed like such a funny, youthful thing to do, and it made me feel silly for a minute—like, what 36-year-old woman wears a hoodie to a meeting? And then I realized that M.M.’s designers had chosen to put a hood on our beloved jardigans for this very reason—to have a little more fun, to take ourselves a little less seriously, and to add a little whimsy and mystery to the everyday. I tend to wear the Colette with the Colby joggers for a look that is as close to a business tracksuit as possible.

A Top I’ll Wear a Bra For

Baggy clothes are the standard uniform for lazy women, but going a little fitted throws an interesting wrench into the mix. For one, with fitted clothes, like the beautifully knit Eileen top, a bra is usually necessary. And while laziness and bras are enemies, the Eileen makes putting one on worth it (trust me on this). And since I’m going fitted on top, I pop on the wide-legged Anderson pants on the bottom to balance everything out.

A Sweater That Feels Like a Hug

Now that my husband is back in the office and my daughter is in daycare, I am alone for large chunks of time. For the last seven months I’ve had a baby on me non-stop, and it’s weird to be so physically free for over eight hours a day. I love the freedom—don’t get me wrong—but also…it’s kind of lonely. And sometimes, I really want a hug. I’m not saying the Snyder can replace the warm embrace of a loved one, but on days when I don’t want to think about getting dressed, and also need a little TLC, putting it on over my favorite Leslie T-shirt definitely raises my serotonin levels just enough.

A Sweatshirt That Says “Happy Friday”

With my office being at home, TGIF doesn’t have the same oomph that it once did. Still—the symbolic end of the work-week is definitely something to celebrate. But sometimes I need a Friday boost on a Tuesday—you know what I mean? The Para sweatshirt with the Zhou culottes is the outfit for that. It’s a look that’s oversized (but not baggy!), structured, but comfy. It’s something I would lazily throw on before brunch with my friends, if brunch was still a thing.
