Are You Bold Enough to Try This Slightly Scandalous Styling Hack?

A buttoned-up blazer with nothing underneath is peak revenge dressing, and we can’t recommend it enough.

By Madeleine Kim

Picture this: You’re back in the office with your coworkers, and it’s almost time for you to lead a meeting. You’ve had exactly the right amount of coffee, and you’re actually really excited for your presentation (your slides have animated transitions and everything). The twist? You’re completely topless…kind of.

No, this isn’t a stress dream or an ill-fated dare. See, you’re not actually topless, you’re just wearing your jacket as a shirt—a two-for-one special, you might say. It’s a fun, only slightly scandalous new styling hack you’ve picked up from your favorite online magazine, The M Dash (and can we just say, you look amazing).

If 2020 was the year of going braless, 2021 is the year of going topless. We’re shedding our pajamas and sweats and dressing up a bit, but we’re giving everything a power-casual twist. We’re wearing buttoned-up blazers with nothing underneath and manifesting the irreverence we hope to find this summer. Want to give it a try? Here are six jackets with enough coverage (and style) that you can wear them all by their lonesome.

1.

The Moreland Jacket in Black

The OrigamiTech fabric of the Moreland jacket is so light and comfy, you’d be tempted to wear it on its own even if we didn’t tell you to. Wrinkle-resistant, machine-washable, and silky-smooth, it’s kind of like a track jacket you can wear to work. Wear it tucked into wide-legged pants like the Tinsley trousers for an unexpected take on suiting.

2.

The Gaia Jacket in Sharkskin

With its sculptural lapels and sharp pleating, the Gaia jacket is so gorgeously designed, nobody’s going to be paying attention to whatever shirt you wear under it—so why wear one at all? It looks great with everything from jeans and leggings to matching suit pants (but again, the jacket is the star of the show; the other pieces in your outfit are just supporting characters).

3.

The Scotte Jacket in Pearl

The silk Scotte jacket doesn’t just pass as a shirt—it was specifically designed to be worn as a jacket or top interchangeably. It’s the elegance of a silk top, the cool factor of a motorcycle jacket, and the polish of a trench coat all in one. Pro tip: Try tucking it into wide-legged jeans like the Milos, and use the silk sash as a belt for your pants.

4.

The Bennett Jacket in Black

The Bennett jacket is one of our most classic-looking blazers, making it all the more fun to break the rules and wear it with nothing underneath. The buttons go just high enough that you could be wearing a cami, but they’re low enough to keep people guessing. Try the Bennett with the matching Horton or Mejia pants to complete your slightly risqué suit.

5.

The Porter Jacket in Black/White

Once you try on the Porter jacket, you’ll get why it’s best worn all by itself. Crafted from a luxurious knit that we call Interweave, it’s as stretchy and comfortable as your favorite cardigan and feels great against the skin. Add a thick belt, like the just-restocked Beebe, to literally pull the outfit together.

6.

The Jensen Trench in Pearl

You could wear the Jensen trench over your favorite leggings and T-shirt for an instant style boost, or you could skip the underpinnings altogether and wear it by itself as a head-turning wrap dress. Just add strappy sandals and your favorite earrings, and you’ll be ready to command any room you walk into.
