The Inspiration Behind Our “Ready to ____” Collection

By Madeleine Kim

May 22, 2020

We’ll let you in on some inside info: Up until a couple months ago, we were planning to call our summer collection “Ready to Play.” For obvious reasons, that name stopped feeling appropriate around mid-March. But when we recently asked ourselves, “What are we ready to do right now?”—we realized that despite the uncertain circumstances we’re all facing, there’s a lot we’re looking forward to. And that’s just how we feel about our summer collection. We’ve been lusting after these pieces for over a year (since we started developing them), and we’re so excited to share them with you. There’s no denying that the world looks different than it did when we designed this collection, but we still believe there’s value in loving what you put on every day. We can’t wait to head into summer—and hopefully, a bit more normalcy—in these joyful styles.

We’ve dubbed our new collection “Ready to ____,” because we want you to fill in the blank with the things you’re looking forward to as summer begins. Ready to learn a weird hobby? Let us know how you like basket-weaving. Ready to find your ideal martini recipe? Start with three parts gin and one part dry vermouth (then stir or shake—you’re the boss). Ready to sit outside watching for Bay-Breasted Warblers? Break out the binoculars. Or maybe you’re ready to find inventive outfit pairings for the pieces in your closet? We have more than a few ideas.

Our new collection features unexpected, airy styles meant to evoke dreaminess, emotionality, fantasy, and earthiness. Miyako, our Chief Creative Officer, was particularly inspired by the work of Sarah Moon, a French fashion photographer known for her ethereal, romantic aesthetic. To capture this mood, our designs incorporate techniques—such as shirring, gathering, pleating, twisting, and hand-stitching—that lend dimension, texture, and ease to the clothes.

Despite all that’s changed since we created these designs, we still find ourselves yearning for the levity and ease they evoke. You’ll find billowy cotton pieces in soft white that look like they belong in a field of wildflowers; classic fabrics made modern and lightweight for summer weather; and separates that pair together to look like dresses and jumpsuits—all in vibrant prints and colors. We styled our photoshoot around joy-generating summer activities (from growing eating fruit to hula hooping), because this collection was designed to inspire revelry.

It’s true: None of us is going to have the carefree, international-travel-filled summers we dreamed of back in January. But that doesn’t mean we can’t embrace the new season with a “ready to” mindset—and wear beautiful clothes that make us feel like our best selves. Right about now, we’re itching to take a socially-distanced stroll in the sun, and our new styles are exactly what we want to wear.

Now, we want to hear from you: What are you ready to do in your M.M. this season? Let us know on Instagram for the chance to win a $250 gift card, plus the opportunity to name an M.M. product. Click our profile highlight labeled “Summer 2020” for instructions on how to enter (full terms and conditions here). We can’t wait to hear what you’re ready to do!
