How to Update Your Wardrobe for the New Year

Hit reset with 10 elevated essentials—currently at 20% off.

By Emma Steinbergs

It’s the start of a new year, and like clockwork, we suddenly have the itch to breathe new life into our wardrobes. It’s out with the tattered tees and too-tight pants of yesteryear, in with fresh pieces that level up our look and suit our current bodies.

Not sure where to begin? Tackle the basics. Your wardrobe is only as good as the versatile styles you rely on day in and day out, so invest your time and money there first. To help you kick things off, we’ve curated a special selection of rarely discounted, elevated essentials, available at 20% off with code 2024REFRESH (until 1/9/24). Scroll to see 10 of our favorites.

How to Update Your Wardrobe

Tip #1: Purge Unwanted Pieces

Getting rid of old M.M. pieces? No hard feelings. In fact, if they’re still in wearable condition, we encourage you to sell them on our resale site, Second Act, where you can redeem your earnings as cash or store credit. You can also send any non-M.M. items to our partners at thredUP, who sell consignment-worthy items and donate or recycle the rest.

Tip #2: Identify Which Ones You Want to Replace

  • If you wore a piece to death, that’s an automatic sign it’s worth replacing with a similar style. Bidding adieu to your classic white tee? Pick up a new one, made from high-quality pima cotton—ensuring its longevity for years to come.
  • If you no longer like an item (or simply never wore it), your answer is easy: Don’t replace it!
  • If you still like an item but there’s some aspect that’s just a little bit off (e.g. it’s dry-clean-only), swap it for an improved version (e.g. a similar style that’s machine-washable).

Tip #3: Prioritize the Essentials

Again, if you end up craving a major wardrobe overhaul, go easy on your wallet by refreshing your basics first—and taking 20% off these pieces with code 2024REFRESH.

10 Best-Selling Essentials

1.

An Office-Appropriate T-Shirt

Few clothing items get more wear than a white tee—especially one made from our 365Knit. This best-selling knit has a substantial handfeel, which gives the Choe top more formality and structure than a traditional T-shirt. In other words, you can wear it any day of the week.

2.

A Polished Jean

Everyone needs a pair of dressy jeans, and we think you should give the Hockley jeans a chance. They have the structured look of classic denim, but as the fabric name suggests, they’re better—thanks to Turkish two-way stretch cotton. They also feature adjustable hems, so there’s no need to get them tailored if you find them a tad too long.

3.

A Toss-Over-Anything Layer

Just offloaded a jacket and a cardigan? Replace them with a piece that fulfills both functions. Combining the structure of a jacket with the stretch of a cardigan, our jardigans do just that, and the Merritt is the top-selling silhouette of the bunch.

4.

A Classic Button-Down

Perhaps you work in a corporate office, or maybe you just have timelessly chic personal style. In either case, a button-down is an absolute capsule wardrobe staple. The Lagarde is our improvement upon this classic, featuring non-starchy fabric that’s machine-washable, wrinkle-resistant, and odor-resistant—plus an extra button at the bustline to prevent gaping.

5.

A Lazy-Day Work Pant

We all have that one pair of athleisure-inspired work pants for those days when we just can’t be bothered to wear proper trousers. You’ll find that most options out there are less than chic, but the Colby pants will surprise you. Made from our wrinkle-resistant OrigamiTech fabric, they’re sleek and put-together while featuring a discreet elastic waistband.

6.

A Breathable Turtleneck

Love the look of turtlenecks but find that they’re usually too stuffy? Try a lightweight option like the Elizabeth. It’s made from our washable silk jersey, which is supremely soft and breathable.

7.

A Go-To Blouse

Getting a new top is one of the most cost-efficient ways to make your wardrobe feel fresh. The Nejvi, our #1 best-selling top, is a no-brainer, thanks to its drapey silhouette and wrinkle-resistant, machine-washable fabric. Even better? It can be worn tucked or untucked—so it’s basically two tops for the price of one.

A Fun Knit

Why not pick up another top while you’re at it? Featuring a geometric knitting pattern and a rich caramel hue, the Montean top instantly adds unexpected texture and color to your wardrobe.

9.

A Comfortable Blazer

It’s time to clear out your shoulder-constricting blazers and invest in one that feels as good as it looks. The classically tailored Yiyan fits the bill, thanks to its marriage of our menswear-inspired houndstooth pattern with an innovative, stretchy knit.

A Fancy Pant

If you’re not a huge fan of dresses or skirts—even for special occasions—then you need a pair of fancy pants in your life. Made from our gorgeously drapey washable satin, the Smith pants pair a lustrous look with a slightly relaxed fit.
