How to Layer T-Shirts Like a Professional Stylist

Need to remix your summer favorites for fall? Our brand stylist, Nyjerah, shows us how it’s done.

By Caitlin Abber

Confession: I have been living in our T-shirts since April. I have duplicates of the Leslie, Alina, and Paige in every color, and for the last six months, I’ve been rotating them with a pair of jeans, stretchy pants, classic gold hoops, and a bold lip. They’re made of hand-picked Pima cotton, and they’re the softest thing around. No one on my team has said anything to me about it, and like that news reporter who wore the same suit for a year, I feel like I have cracked some important code while mastering the comfiest work-from-home capsule wardrobe at the same time.

But now that it’s fall, and it’s getting a little too chilly for short sleeves and tank tops, I’m looking for ways to remix my old faves while adding in some warmer options. In order to get out of my routine, I need some inspiration. That’s why I asked our brand stylist, Nyjerah, to put together some of her favorite fall-friendly T-shirt looks and take them for a spin around town (bonus: these photos should definitely give you a serotonin boost).

The Upgraded Hoodie

Somedays (and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays), a favorite hoodie is just what makes sense. But what if your favorite hoodie was made of cashmere? Now that’s an upgrade. Nyjerah styles our Judith hoodie with the Marcia T-shirt and sneakers, but she mixes in some suiting in the form of the Tinsley trousers for a look that’s the reversal of the work-from-home norm of business on top, casual on the bottom (otherwise known as mullet dressing).

The Cool-Girl Blazer

Speaking of suiting, the quickest way to smartly layer a T-shirt is by topping it with a stunning blazer. The oversized O’Hara is an M.M. team favorite because it makes any outfit—T-shirts, dresses, pajamas—look polished, purposeful, and best of all, cool.

The Double-Turtle-Neck

Two looks Nyjerah loves: monochrome and oversized. So when she put together this outfit featuring the Rogola pants and the Sharon top, I wasn’t surprised. But I was delighted when I saw the neck and wrists of the Axam top popping out underneath. This is a super fun and easy way to layer knits and sweaters, especially as the temperature drops.

The Tie with a Twist

I lived in San Francisco in my early twenties, and I got accustomed to days that started off freezing before becoming hot afternoons and then cool, misty evenings. Traveling with layers was a must, but it didn’t always make sense to wear everything at once. The solution? A cozy sweater tied around the shoulders or the waist. I know this might seem like a no-brainer, but with an untucked tee and a pair of wide-legged jeans, a cinch at the waist can turn casual staples into a total look.

The Secret to Pulling Off Sweatpants in Public

Instead of fighting against the sweatpants trend, we’ve decided to embrace it. But of course, for us, it has to be elevated. Yup, more cashmere! Our new joggers are going to change your life, and they’re so special, they deserve to be put on a pedestal. Wear them to a socially-distanced brunch with a pair of stunning shoes (like the Zelda ankle boots), and your favorite T-shirt, and you’ll feel like a celebrity avoiding (or perhaps, attracting) the paparazzi.
