On Duty/Off Duty, Winter Edition: Part 2

February 22, 2019 | Filed in: Your Closet

We’re back with Part 2 of the winter edition of our On Duty/Off Duty series, where we show you how to get the most out of your MM pieces. Up next: MM senior stylist Nyjerah styles our team member Casey both formally and casually. “Casey’s style is feminine and classic. I built her outfits around an elegant skirt, which reads as formal but can also be styled in a way that feels edgy.” Read on to see how Nyjerah styles Casey for on duty and off duty in our Makeba skirt.

On Duty

Casey wears the Makeba skirt, the Margo sweater, and the Ginger pump.

“For Casey’s ‘On Duty’ look, I played around with similar tones to create a cohesive color palette. The rich blue shade of the skirt complements the gray yarn of the Margo sweater, and you get these very soft, pretty purple undertones. The vine jacquard of the Makeba skirt is elevated, but pairing it with a knit makes the whole look feel less conservative—this outfit works just as well for special events as it does for a regular, business casual day in the office.”

“I balanced the swingy silhouette of the skirt with a fitted sweater. My general rule is to pair A-line skirts with tailored tops—it’s all about balance. Tucking the top into the skirt highlights Casey’s waist so that you get a fit-and-flare silhouette. I completed the look with classic pumps to keep the ensemble office-appropriate.”

Off Duty

Casey wears the Makeba skirt and the Daphne sweater.

“I was inspired by street style for Casey’s ‘Off Duty’ look—I wanted to show how you can add some edge to a more formal skirt to make it weekend-ready. I paired the Makeba with Casey’s own white tee and added the Daphne sweater as an extra layer for warmth. The sweater has an oversized fit, which gives it a more casual vibe, but the sash at the waist creates some shape.”

“With this outfit, I wanted to create a beautiful clash between feminine and edgy, and show that you can mix and match formal pieces with casual ones. I styled Casey in simple white sneakers with black socks for some fun color contrast, but this outfit would look just as nice with flats. Some people think you shouldn’t wear flat shoes with longer lengths, but I actually think they work well together—it gives you a relaxed, effortless look.”
