MM Employees on What They’ll Be Reading, Seeing, and Doing over the Holidays

December 21, 2017 | Filed in: Humans of MM

The holidays can be packed to the brim with activity, but if you’re lucky, they are also an opportunity for rest, relaxation, and catching up on all the pop culture that you were too busy to consume in 2017. We asked a few members of our highly cultured marketing and design teams about what they’ll be reading, seeing, and doing over the holiday break. Read on for their recommendations.

“My favorite books that I’ve read this year (although not exactly new releases) were Americanah and The Namesake. Over the break, I plan to read Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng, and I want to finally see Lady Bird, I, Tonyaand The Post.”

—Callie, Art Director

“I watch a lot of Pixar and Disney movies around the holidays. Something about their heartwarming nature just feels so right this time of year! I love Wall-E and Up, and I watched Moana this year and found it to be a welcome departure from the princess movies that my generation grew up with.”

—Ruth, Senior Marketing Associate

“The past few months have been so crazy at work, I wonder if I even remember how to read a book. I’m going to ease back into it with Donna Tartt’s The Secret History, which is my book club’s next pick. And I’m excited to re-listen to Ezra Klein’s wonderful interview with Rebecca Traister, because once just wasn’t enough. It got me so fired up, and I want to listen to it with my mom this time around. Call Me By Your Name was the best film I’ve seen all year, so I will inevitably end up seeing it again. I love a good cry.”

—Tory, Creative Director of Brand

“My favorite films recently are the The Center Will Not Hold, the Joan Didion documentary on Netflix, and Lady Bird. Callie will love it.”

—Corinne, Graphic Designer

“Definitely Star Wars!”

—Lu, Associate Marketing Director

“I’m reading My Brilliant Friend, Book One of the Neapolitan novels by Elena Ferrante. I love it. It’s like literary Mean Girls.”

—Becca, PR Manager

“I’ll be spending the holidays reading my stepmom’s impressive collection of Barefoot Contessa cookbooks, and baking all the desserts that normally feel too ambitious for my pint-sized New York kitchen.”

—Alex, Brand Associate

“I am very excited to read Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders, and my book club pick for January is The Power, a novel that takes the timely question, ‘What if women had all the power?’ quite literally. I also want to make a dent in my serious podcast backlog—I have episodes of My Favorite Murder and Switched on Pop burning a hole in my earbuds, so to speak. Finally, if you haven’t yet gotten around to listening to Dirty John, I highly recommend it—it has all the twists and turns of a soap opera or mystery novel, with the added bonus of being a completely true story. Oh, and of course I must recommend Netflix’s answer to the Hallmark/Lifetime original Christmas movie, A Christmas Prince! So cheesy, so good.”
