5 Stylists Share Their Desert-Island Piece For Every Work Scenario

Whether you’re heading back to the office or just need a little WFH refresh, here are 5 pieces our stylists swear by.

At this point in 2020, we wouldn’t blame you if you’re a little…over it. You might be sick of your home office and your work-from-home uniform and looking to shake things up. Or, if you’re in a city that is starting to (hopefully safely) open up again, you might want to give your wardrobe a little tune up. We get it! That’s why we asked five of our stylists (Lindsey, Samone, Joanna, Kathleen, and Chris) to share the desert island piece they’d grab if they were going back to an office, or just needed a little makeover for Zoom calls.

For Dressing from the Neck Up

Many of us are still Zooming it in every day, and in the middle of this super hot summer, wondering if pants are really necessary (we think it depends on the pants!). If this describes you, you might be looking to mix things up just a little bit, so your colleagues know you haven’t fully fallen down the WFH-DGAF rabbithole. For this, our stylists’ recommend bright tops and sparkly jewelry.

“I love the Antonia top in primrose for its versatility,” says Lindsey. “Whether you want to tuck or untuck it, I always feel put together. It definitely helps to know that there’s a protective layer of anti-odor Polygiene on the on the garment, so I can wear it several times before needing to wash.” Other bold tops to brighten up your workday include the Malki top in baltic blue or the Avery top in Tuscan yellow

If you find yourself living in t-shirts these days, we don’t blame you. One way to make them look a little more put-together is adding a few pieces of delicate jewelry. “While working from home, I’ve been relying on my Asscher-Cut necklace to help dress up my t-shirts for video calls,” says Samone. “I definitely plan to continue wearing the necklace as I ease back into office life. It effortlessly elevates my casual pieces, comes in both silver and gold, and since it’s fairly short, I won’t be tempted to touch it throughout the day.” The Asscher-Cut necklace pairs really well with the Fia earrings or the Piper studs, if you’re looking for that va-va-voom factor (who isn’t, these days?).

For Heading Back In

While you might not find yourself back at work five days a week, as cities open up you might have to head in for a meeting here and there. And since you haven’t seen people in person in months, you probably want to look as close to your best as possible.  “The one M.M. piece I cannot live without is my Zhou culottes,” says Joanna. “I have always been the biggest fan of our culottes, but during quarantine, they’ve given me the perfect balance of comfort and polish to tackle the day.” If you want to pick things up a little more, a structured but summery skirt like the Rowley skirt or a one-and-done piece like the Demi jumpsuit will get the job done.

Another option? Go bold and bright (we could all use some sunshine these days!) with a fitted, bright yellow dress. “The Dylan dress is stretchy and comfortable, making it a great piece to throw on for Zoom calls on the couch or any office meeting,” says Kathleen. “I also love pairing this dress with white sneakers and simple earrings for a more casual summer look. It also works as a nice transition piece moving into the fall by pairing it with heels and your favorite blazer.”

For Somewhere In-Between

And if you still don’t know exactly when you’re going back into an office, but want to find a little motivation in the meantime? A go-to cardigan might be the best bet. “The Emerson cardigan is a great work-from-home piece since you can easily throw it on over a T-shirt for a last-minute Zoom call,” says Chris. “It’s elevated and comfortable. I love to keep mine folded in my desk drawer, so I can pull it out when the office air conditioning gets too cold, or when I get pulled into a meeting and want to look more professional.” Another option is a Merritt jardigan, which is just as cozy on a Sunday morning as it is on a Tuesday afternoon; we like to say it looks like the offspring of a blazer-and-bathrobe power couple.
