All-Day Dressing: Four Outfits to Wear from Morning Until Midnight

Simple tweaks that bring your looks from office-friendly to evening-ready.

By Madeleine Kim

I lived in New York City for five years, and my time there was very full. I had so many experiences, both good (like visiting my first tasting-menu restaurant) and bad (like finding out the hard way that on the J train, “downtown” doesn’t mean what you think it means). But there’s one thing I never did while living in NYC: I never went back to my apartment to change between work and evening plans. Granted, I lived in Brooklyn and worked in Manhattan, but I know my experience wasn’t unique. When you’re living a busy city lifestyle, you really need outfits that can last from morning ’til midnight.

Our fall collection was inspired by city life and designed to meet its demands. It’s a collection made for all-day dressing—for days when you need a look that can take you straight from work to a party without hauling a change of clothes in your tote. Below, find four looks that will carry you from day to night with just a few small accessory swaps.

Nene Dress + Larissa Sweater

From Work to Date Night

For Work: I love the color palette and effortless silhouette of the washable silk Nene dress, but a slip dress on its own feels a bit too occasion-y for work. The solution: Add a knit pullover like the Larissa sweater, and your dress becomes a skirt—only way more comfortable, since there’s no waistband. I sized up in the Larissa to achieve a slightly slouchy look and accessorized with the geometric Shay earrings and mesh flats.

For Date Night: Heading straight from work to a date? No need to rush home to change. For a dressier vibe, tie the Larissa sweater around your shoulders and let the Nene dress shine. You could also swap your flats for heels (similar) and switch up your hairstyle, if the mood strikes.

Lagarde Shirt + Milo Jeans

From Work to a Networking Dinner

For Work: This simple ensemble gets its personality from its rich, autumnal color palette. Our new espresso color is the perfect shade of brown, so I’m thrilled that it comes in the Lagarde shirt, which is not only machine-washable, but also wrinkle- and odor-resistant. I love how it looks with the Milo jeans in saddle for a warm, tonal look. Silver accents like the Palmer earrings, Everly belt, and chain-adorned loafers add polish.

For a Networking Dinner: The Lagarde shirt and Milo jeans provide a great, professional base for your networking-dinner look. Add some extra personality with the buttery vegan leather Nicky jacket and the bold Lennon earrings. If you want some additional height, you can also swap your loafers for heeled boots (similar).

Zana Dress

From Work to a Cocktail Party

For Work: For a business-formal look that’s decidedly not boring, pair the 365Knit Zana dress with the textural Lilia jacket, which looks like tweed but feels like a lightweight cardigan. I like buttoning the jacket all the way to the top to create the appearance of separates, but you can also wear it unbuttoned to show off the dress. White shoes (similar) and striking silver earrings give the outfit a unique spin.

For a Cocktail Party: The Zana dress is simultaneously full-coverage and sexy, making it the perfect piece for a sophisticated cocktail party. To transition into after-hours mode, just stash the Lilia jacket in your purse (it won’t wrinkle!), add a sparkly necklace, and dab on a fun lip color. For a bit of color, try tying a colorful silk scarf to your purse.

Jett Tank + Milo Jeans

From Work to Dinner with Friends

For Work: Combining patterned pieces with textured styles is one simple way to add interest to your look. Try the mini-check Milo jeans with the navy-and-ivory ribbed Merritt jardigan for a fun take on business casual. The ivory Jett tank serves as a chic and easy underpinning, while square hoop earrings and jelly sandals (similar) add a playful twist.

For Dinner with Friends: To transition into a more casual after-work look, simply remove the Merritt jardigan (it makes a great desk sweater—many desk chairs at M.M. HQ feature a jardigan draped over the back). If you’d like, you can also change your hairstyle and accessories—here, I’ve swapped in a pair of Pamela Love earrings for a touch of whimsy.
